Knowt is a study platform from Knowt Inc. that serves two readers at once: high school and college students revising for tests, especially the AP, SAT and ACT, and teachers who want to build quizzes and assessments quickly. For students it combines flashcards, notes and a large shared library with AI tools that turn lectures, PDFs and slides into study material. For teachers it adds auto-graded assessments, AI tutoring chats that the teacher can monitor, and class analytics. The core of both sides is free, with a paid Ultra plan for students and school or district licenses for organizations. (The FAQ even addresses the name: it is Knowt, "not Knowit.")

What students get

The starting point is the flashcard set. A student can type terms and definitions, add images for free, bring over sets made elsewhere, or let the AI Smart Flashcard maker build cards from uploaded material. The FAQ lists the files the AI tools accept: a 40 page PDF or Word document, long PowerPoint decks, a 3 hour lecture video, or plain lecture audio. Separate tools summarize PDFs, images, slides, videos and spreadsheets, and an AI Lecture Notetaker records a class and returns notes, flashcards, quizzes and games.

Study modes give each set several uses. Learn Mode mixes multiple choice, true or false, fill-in-the-blank and flashcard questions, and its options let a student switch to written answers or change the question types. There is also a spaced repetition mode, a matching game, a practice test generated from notes, and traditional flashcards with a sorting mode. An AI helper called Kai can quiz a student out loud, make a podcast from an uploaded file, answer questions about notes and videos, and explain why a practice answer was wrong.

Students who do not want to build anything can browse the shared library, which the home page puts at 5 million+ resources. Another Knowt page gives the scale behind it: 3,000,000+ students and teachers, 2,000,000+ notes and 320,000,000+ flashcards created.

Exam prep

For admissions and placement tests, Knowt runs exam hubs. The AP Exam Hub has notes, study guides and flashcards for all 38 AP exams, with what the site calls Ultimate study guides for almost all of them, written by past AP students; the remaining subjects are in progress. Around the hub sit a Practice Test Room with unlimited multiple-choice questions, a Free-Response Room where students practice FRQs with automatic grading and explanations, and an AP Score Calculator. The home page also describes SAT and ACT prep with a personalized schedule, unlimited practice, mock exams and analytics, and mentions IB revision notes on an IB Hub. On adoption, the home page claims that "At least 700,000 of 1.3 million students used Knowt for the May 2025 AP season."

Pricing

The plans page lists three student options:

  • Basic Free, at no cost: unlimited file creation, live collaboration and storage, and access to the library of 5 million resources.
  • Ultra Annual, $12.99 per month, billed upfront for $149.99, with a "Start 3 day free trial" button.
  • Ultra Monthly, $24.99 per month, billed every month.

Ultra adds an ad-free experience, the AI summarizers for PDFs, video, images and PowerPoint, the AI lecture recording summarizer, the podcast generator, the AI voice tutor on all files, and full access to AP, SAT and ACT prep. Because the ad-free experience is listed as an Ultra feature, the free plan is not ad free.

The refund terms are specific. Within 24 hours of purchase or renewal, Knowt refunds the full subscription amount "minus ~3.5% transaction fees," and refunds typically take 5 to 10 business days to reach a bank account. Knowt cannot refund purchases made on iOS or Android devices; those go through Apple or Google. Subscribers receive promotional coins after the trial ends and the first payment goes through, and spending them on merchandise in the Knowt shop ends refund eligibility. Auto-renewal is canceled under Settings, Your Plan.

What teachers and schools get

The teacher page calls Knowt "Free for individual teachers." A teacher can upload any file and assign multiple-choice, true or false or free-response questions with auto-grading, run a live game at the end of a recorded class, or assign full-length AP, SAT and ACT mock exams with instant analytics. Math teachers can build assessments where students answer on a whiteboard. A built-in AI grader handles short answers, essays and chatbot assignments, suggesting scores and editable comments. Writing assessments track AI usage and typing patterns.

Monitored chats are the other half. Teachers can set up a one-to-one tutor or an automatically graded conversational assessment: a speaking partner or asynchronous oral assessment for world language classes, an essay coach tied to a custom rubric, debates with historical figures for social studies, or a code helper for computer science. The system alerts teachers to inappropriate language, records incidents for later review, and lets them escalate serious ones to district admins. The page also lists 35+ AI tools for planning, including a lesson plan generator and a rubric maker, plus differentiation features for adjusting reading levels and generating tiered assignments, which it pitches for IEPs, English language learners and mixed-ability groups. A Chrome extension imports material from Quizlet, Wayground, Kahoot and YouTube.

For organizations, individual educators can use up to 20 Ultra features a month, and schools or districts buy licenses on a separate pricing page. The license comparison names unlimited AI usage on teacher-owned files, incident monitoring, rostering through Clever, ClassLink or another SIS, and LMS integration with Canvas and Google Classroom. Knowt supports Google, Microsoft, Clever and ClassLink single sign-on. On privacy, the page says Knowt signs Data Privacy Agreements for free, within 24 hours, after which students in that organization see no ads, have no profiles, cannot buy subscriptions and cannot share files outside the organization. Professional development resources and an educator community are offered for rollout.

The app

Free apps are available for iOS and Android, and files and study progress sync between the app and the website. An Exams tab collects study guides for upcoming tests. On reviews, the home page shows 4.8 stars from 6,200+ reviews and counts 8,567,707 users across schools.

Who it suits

Knowt fits a high school student preparing for AP exams, the SAT or ACT who wants free flashcards, practice tests and free-response grading in one place, and who may pay for Ultra during exam season to get the AI tools and full test prep. College students who record lectures and work from long PDFs will get the most out of the summarizers. Teachers get an unusually capable free tier for building graded quizzes, and schools that need SSO, rostering, LMS links and a signed privacy agreement have a district license path. The trade-offs are modest: the free plan carries ads, the refund window is a single day, and app-store purchases fall outside Knowt's own refund policy. The exam material on its pages centers on AP, SAT, ACT and IB, so it suits school-age test-takers more than professional certification candidates.
