What GoTestPrep is
GoTestPrep is an online preparation platform for two NSW exams: the Selective High School Placement Test, sat in Year 6 for entry to a selective high school in Year 7, and the Opportunity Class (OC) Placement Test, sat in Year 4 for entry to an Opportunity Class in Years 5 and 6. Its About page describes it as "a Sydney-based Australian platform" offering "structured courses, computer-based mock exams, instant writing feedback, and parent-friendly analytics," and the site is updated for the 2027 official format. GoTestPrep calls itself "Australia's leading online test preparation platform" for these two exams and says it offers "the most comprehensive courses in Australia"; both are its own claims.
The company's pitch is that a question bank is not enough. In its words, "Mock tests alone cannot teach the underlying skills NSW examiners assess," so it builds "structured courses first," then layers official-format mock tests and progress tracking on top. Both exams are computer-based now, and the platform is designed to imitate that environment.
The courses
The Selective course covers the four sections of the test across 38 units. Thinking Skills has 16 units on logic and deduction, patterns and sequences, spatial reasoning and analogies. Mathematical Reasoning has 8 units on number operations, fractions and ratios, measurement and geometry, and data and statistics. Reading has 5 units on comprehension, vocabulary in context, fiction and non-fiction, and poetry and informational texts. Writing has 9 units on narrative, persuasive and informative writing, planning under time pressure, and structure and clarity.
The OC course covers the three OC sections in 29 units: the same 16 units of Thinking Skills, 8 of Mathematical Reasoning and 5 of Reading, with no writing section because the OC test has none.
Each course page explains how to use it in four steps. Students work through the units in order, since each builds on the last, at their own pace. Thinking Skills and Mathematical Reasoning lessons include a guided video solution showing how an expert solves the problem, which can be paused and rewound. The student then answers an interactive question on the lesson page and reads the full explanation. After every few units comes a short timed practice set, with a clear explanation for every mistake and the option to go back over the unit.
Mock exams and feedback
The mock exams are timed and computer-based, and the FAQ says they "replicate the timing, navigation, and difficulty level of the official test." There are separate mock tests for each section, including Writing for the Selective test. The Selective program offers up to 80 full-length mocks and 2,500+ questions; the OC program up to 60 full-length mocks and 2,200+ questions, depending on the plan. Students get unlimited retakes of all mock tests and practice sets during their plan period, and the FAQ encourages retaking tests "to master difficult concepts and improve speed."
Feedback is the platform's other main feature. Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills questions come with step-by-step Solution Explanations. Writing responses for the Selective test get "AI-powered marks and detailed feedback," which the FAQ says evaluates structure, vocabulary and grammar and returns guidance at once rather than after days of waiting for a tutor. The FAQ describes the whole system as an "instant feedback loop" that provides "24/7 support by delivering in-depth, personalised feedback and explanations for every practice question."
Analytics and study plans
Parents get a dashboard that tracks progress across all four test components, measures growth against NSW exam proficiency bands and identifies specific knowledge gaps, so study time can go where it will lift the score most. The FAQ adds that parents receive "a weekly summary of their child's study activity highlighting strong areas and areas that need more work." Custom study plans, which the site describes as AI-driven, adapt to a child's strengths and gaps in each subject. Because plans and analytics are personal, each account is "strictly for a single student" and cannot be shared between siblings.
The platform is fully responsive and works on smartphones, though the FAQ recommends a laptop or tablet to match the computer-based exam. Technical and account questions go through the Contact Us page.
Plans and prices
The FAQ lists three plans for each exam in the 2027 cycle. For the Selective test:
- Free Plan, $0: 4 mock exams, multiple practice sets and 150+ questions.
- Gold Plan, $197: 40 mock exams and 1,250+ questions.
- Platinum Plan, $247: 80 mock exams and 2,500+ questions, marked as the most popular.
For the OC test:
- Free Plan, $0: 3 mock exams, multiple practice sets and 100+ questions.
- Gold Plan, $195: 30 mock exams and 1,100+ questions.
- Platinum Plan, $245: 60 mock exams and 2,200+ questions, marked as the most popular.
The free tests need no credit card. Each plan stays active until the access end date shown on the account, typically about one week after the 2027 test; after that, practice sets, mock tests and past results are locked until the family chooses a plan for the next exam cycle.
GoTestPrep also runs a YouTube channel, GoTestPrep Australia, with free Selective and OC video lessons, walkthroughs and worked examples, and the site has exam guides, strategy articles and subject tips for parents.
What families say
The site shows a 4.8 out of 5 rating from 16 Google reviews. Henry Nguyen writes that "The amount of high-quality resources given is phenomenal," and Aym B says the "Free trial was really useful right before the test day." James Chen praises the analytics dashboard: "I can see exactly where my daughter needs to focus," split between reading, maths and thinking skills. David Nguyen writes that "The practice sets are aligned with the actual test format. My child went from anxious to confident," and Emma Wilson writes of the writing feedback: "My daughter gets instant scoring and knows how to improve." Lisa Thompson writes that a son who struggled with time management in Thinking Skills improved in speed and accuracy within a few weeks, and that "the support team is responsive."
Who it suits
GoTestPrep suits NSW families with a child in Year 4 heading for the OC test or in Year 6 heading for the Selective test, who want a complete self-paced program rather than practice papers alone. The structured courses help a child who still needs the underlying skills, the mock exams build familiarity with the computer-based format, and the parent dashboard and weekly summaries suit parents who want to steer study time. The free plan is a genuine way to test the platform, and the paid plans scale by the number of mocks.
It is built for these two NSW exams only, so families preparing for NAPLAN, scholarship tests or other states' selective tests will need another resource. There are no live classes or tutors: teaching comes through recorded walkthroughs, explanations and automated writing feedback, which works best for a child who can study steadily on their own with a parent checking the dashboard. Access ends shortly after the test date, so families should start early enough to use the plan fully.
