JoomLMS is a learning management system designed as a component for Joomla, the open-source content management system. Its homepage pitches it at three kinds of buyer at once: course sellers, corporate training teams and startups testing an education idea, under the line "Train employees, teach students and sell courses online!" The About page says JoomLMS has been around since 2006, when there was no complete eLearning solution for Joomla, and that the company's eLearning group built "a fully functional learning management system designed as a component for Joomla! CMS." The same page lists 1000+ customers, 30+ countries, 20+ years of experience and 20+ resellers.
Because it lives inside Joomla rather than WordPress, JoomLMS sits in this directory's plugin category as the equivalent tool for the other big open-source CMS: the LMS installs into a Joomla website, and the course area shares the site's design, extensions and user base. It also belongs among business LMS options, since corporate training is one of the three uses the homepage builds its case around.
Building courses and assessing learners
The company's comparison page describes "integrated tools for native courses creation" and an embedded course builder, so courses can be assembled inside the LMS from your own learning materials. Alongside that, the homepage and features page name SCORM and AICC compatibility, which the features list spells out as "SCORM 1.2, 2004 and AICC compliance," plus LTI compatibility. In practice that means packages made in an authoring tool, or bought from a courseware vendor, can run inside JoomLMS next to native content, and the homepage pitches this as saving time on content creation through export and import of eLearning materials.
Assessment is the most detailed part of the feature list. You can create quizzes and surveys, build tests from a question pool, organize quizzes and questions into categories, configure feedback, set the number of attempts, let learners resume an attempt, and choose from 12 question types with media files attached to questions. Learners can print or email their quiz results, and instructors get quiz reports and statistics. Custom quiz certificates are listed too, and the homepage frames certificates as a way to automate certification training and encourage engagement.
Communication tools cover course announcements, a monthly, weekly or daily calendar view for instructors and admins, a built-in mailbox with automatic email notifications, and a forum. The homepage adds live and video conferencing: you can schedule live conferences and webinars within the JoomLMS framework and combine them with self-paced material for blended learning. The integrations list says you can connect your preferred webinar provider.
Users, enrollment and reporting
User management is where the business and school uses show. Default roles are learner, trainer, assistant, LMS administrator and CEO/parent, with custom roles in the PRO edition only. Admins can import and export users manually or from CSV lists, organize them into user groups at system level and at course level, and choose between self-registration with self-enrollment and manual registration and enrollment by an administrator. The PRO edition adds Organizations, which the features page describes as independent user and course management and reporting, useful for a training provider serving several client companies from one installation.
Reporting covers learner progress, course completion and course materials access, with criteria and filters applied to each report. Admins can configure custom grading and assessment scales, define custom items to be graded, track learner performance and grades, and export data as CSV or XLS. For the corporate training use, the homepage describes the workflow simply: upload training materials and tests to the portal, invite employees, and monitor the progress of the training.
The interface is multi-language, the front page is configurable, URLs are search-friendly, and there is a branding-free option. The homepage also lists custom branding for different audiences, a unique domain, interface customization and custom functionality. Learners can reach materials on any device, since the JoomLMS template is tablet and mobile responsive.
Selling courses
For course sellers, JoomLMS includes e-commerce rather than relying on a separate store. The features page lists multiple native payment methods, coupon codes and discounts, invoice configuration, multiple subscriptions and recurring payments, and detailed payment statistics. The homepage adds that you can issue invoices and offer free trials to your own learners. The company's pitch to sellers is to monetize a blog, provide coaching services or start a language program online, and it describes JoomLMS as making it "easy to turn your training programs into powerful revenue generators." The startup pitch is to test an idea for viability before spending money to develop your own LMS, and to start earning at the MVP stage.
Pricing, editions and hosting
The comparison page gives the commercial terms. JoomLMS is commercial software "starting from 299 USD/year," licensed per number of enrolled users and per license validity period, "with an option for unlimited number of users and perpetual license." It is proprietary, but the PRO edition ships with open source code, with only two files holding the license information encoded, and the page says the Professional edition can be integrated with other systems through that code. JoomLMS is written in PHP, and the company says the core JoomLMS team can customize it on request. The same page describes the product as usable in all sectors but more oriented toward eCommerce and educational institutions.
There are two ways to run it. On-premise JoomLMS installs on a Joomla-based website, which the homepage recommends if you are worried about data security, want the LMS inside your internal business processes, or do not want to manage several platforms. The hosted version stores JoomLMS on the company's servers, with the company handling initial deployment and upgrades, for teams that do not want to deal with installation, maintenance and backups. The comparison page adds that JoomLMS provides web hosting and Joomla installation on request. Visitors can request a free trial or book a personalized demo with one of the company's LMS experts.
Who uses it
The showcase page lists organizations running JoomLMS across non-profit, education, aviation, healthcare, business, real estate and consulting. Examples include TrainingCourse.com, which the page says provides over 800 online elearning training courses for businesses and individuals; ProEducate, with online training for licensing in real estate and mortgage finance; EASAOnline, with EASA compliant training for aircraft professionals; the Swiss Federation of Samaritans for first aid and rescue services; MSD 360 Medicine Handling for obligatory courses on medicine handling for farmers; and Parenting Safe Children, which teaches parents how to keep children safe from abuse. Video testimonials on the homepage include Annie Gardiner of Parenting Safe Children ("JoomLMS helps to enhance our training delivery and reach") and Marshall Northcott of The Sales Advantage, who says the training business "became international."
Who it suits
JoomLMS suits organizations that already run a Joomla site, or want one, and need a full LMS inside it: a training company selling certification-style courses with quizzes and certificates, a professional body running licensing or compliance training, or a business that wants employee training, reporting and CSV user imports without a per-seat SaaS contract. The PRO edition's Organizations feature and open source code make sense for a provider serving several client companies or needing deep integration. A creator who lives in WordPress, or a solo coach who wants a fully hosted course storefront with no CMS to manage, will find the Joomla foundation an extra layer to learn, though the hosted version removes most of the server work.
