What Surgent is

Surgent is an accounting and finance education company that sells exam review courses for professional credentials, along with tax preparer training, continuing education and skill-building courses. Its footer gives an address in Dallas, Texas. The homepage says that "For over 35 years, Surgent has been a trusted partner in helping accounting and finance professionals launch and lead successful careers" and that it has "proudly served over 250,000 professionals".

The most important recent change concerns the CPA exam. Surgent's own CPA exam review page is now headed "CPA Exam Review, Now Through UWorld" and states that "Surgent is now part of UWorld". The page's FAQ explains that for CPA preparation, "UWorld CPA Review is the current recommended course", and that existing Surgent CPA Review customers are being contacted separately about their access. So a CPA candidate who lands on Surgent today is sent to UWorld's course, while the rest of Surgent's catalog carries on under its own name. The same FAQ confirms that "Surgent EA Review, Surgent Income Tax School, and Surgent CPE remain active on the Surgent platform."

This entry covers what Surgent still sells: exam review for the EA, CIA, CISA and CMA credentials, the Income Tax School, continuing education, and the Surgent IQ skill-building catalog.

Exam review

Surgent's Exam Review menu lists courses for four credentials besides the CPA: EA Review for prospective enrolled agents, CIA Review and CISA Review for candidates heading into internal audit and information systems audit, and CMA Review for prospective certified management accountants. The homepage describes these as "predictive AI-powered Exam Review courses" that "personalize your study plan, so you get to exam day faster".

The personalization is the core of the pitch. In Surgent's words, "Our Predictive AI Technology measures student strengths and weaknesses, helping to formulate a student-centered study plan." The course "identifies what you need to study, allowing you to focus on learning what you need to know to pass the exam", with study plans built around "your schedule, your skills and your learning style". The homepage claims students are "exam-ready up to 4x faster than those enrolled in other exam review courses", a company claim rather than an independent measure. A blog post titled "5 Ways Predictive AI Technology Will Improve Your Learning Experience" sits among the featured articles, next to tips on time management and on passing the Enrolled Agent exam on the first try.

Surgent backs the review courses with a pass guarantee. The homepage states: "Pass the first time taking your exam, or you get your money back!" The site has a dedicated Pass Guarantee page and a refund policy in the footer, which hold the conditions. Payment plans are offered too, under "Payment Plans" and "Ways to Pay", and there is a "Switch to Surgent" page for candidates moving from another provider. Free trials are available for Exam Review, Continuing Education and the Income Tax School, each with its own sign-up.

The course team is described as "industry experts" who "craft courses with the most up-to-date content", with "highly qualified instructors" guiding learners through the material.

CPA review through UWorld

Because the CPA page still sits on Surgent's site, it is worth knowing what it now offers. It presents three UWorld CPA Review packages with what it calls an "exclusive Surgent discount", applied automatically at checkout. Premier is listed at $1,999 (down from $3,499) with 18 months of access to the four core sections, 9,000+ practice questions, 500+ simulations, 1,400+ video lectures, SmartPath adaptive technology, the UAsk AI study assistant and a mobile app. Elite-Unlimited is listed at $2,299 (down from $3,899) and adds access until you pass, printed study guides, full-length mock exams and live instructor boot camps. Elite-Unlimited+ is listed at $2,899 (down from $4,699) and adds access to all six exam sections, the full print and digital library and a per-section pass guarantee: "a $250 refund per section if you don't pass, up to $1,000 total". The FAQ adds that the unlimited packages run for up to 3 years, with extensions for candidates who show an upcoming exam date. These are UWorld's products, sold through Surgent's page.

Income Tax School

Surgent Income Tax School is the tax side of the business. The menu lays out a path in stages: "Become a Tax Preparer" ("Become a tax preparer in weeks"), "Become an Enrolled Agent" ("Take the next step in your tax preparation career"), and "Continue Your Education" ("Stay up to date, improve skills, and earn credit"). A B2B option, ITS For Business, lets firms "Train your own tax preparers with Surgent." The homepage says the school offers "flexible, expert-led courses to help you earn credentials, meet CE requirements, and thrive in the tax preparation field", aimed at everyone from beginners to experienced tax pros and enrolled agents. An "Our Credentials" page is linked from the school's menu.

Continuing education and skill building

Surgent CPE is its continuing education line, with its own listing in this directory. On this homepage it is summarized as "hundreds of expert-led courses covering timely topics in accounting, tax, auditing, ethics, and more", with "over 10,000 CPE credits available across live webinars and self-study formats". The CPE menu names Accounting & Tax CPE, CPE for CMAs, CE for CFPs and CE for IRS.

Surgent IQ is the skill-building catalog, described as "certification courses" offering "digital, hands-on learning experiences". It includes Data Analytics Certifications, data tools for accounting professionals, Introductory Accounting and Microsoft Office Training. Surgent Interactive, part of the same line, is billed as "Game-based learning" with "Short lessons, faster learning". The site stresses that these are digital courses learners can take on their own schedule.

Who Surgent serves

The "Who We Help" section names five groups. Individuals use "customized prep courses for all major accounting and credentialing exams". Firms and corporations use business partnerships for "learning and development for staff members at each stage of their careers". For faculty, the site says "Over 300 colleges and universities integrate exam prep coursework into their accounting and business programs." Students currently in school get discounts. Associations, including national and state societies, partner with Surgent to offer support to their members. Resellers and affiliates have their own partnership routes.

Support runs through live chat ("Chat Now"), a toll-free phone line, a help center, webinars and a resource center with salary and career guides.

Who it suits

Surgent suits candidates for the EA, CIA, CISA or CMA who want a self-paced course that builds the study plan for them and tells them where they are weak, and who value a money-back pass guarantee. Tax professionals have a clear ladder in the Income Tax School, from first preparer course to enrolled agent and ongoing CE, and firms can train their own preparers through it. Accounting departments and universities can buy for groups.

CPA candidates should note that Surgent's own CPA review has given way to UWorld's course, so the Surgent name no longer describes that product. And for continuing education alone, the separate Surgent CPE offer is the more direct place to look.
