What Bionic Turtle Is
Bionic Turtle is an online exam prep provider for the Financial Risk Manager (FRM) certification awarded by the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP). It sells courses for FRM Part I and FRM Part II and nothing else. The About page says Bionic Turtle LLC is "an approved FRM prep provider of the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP®), offering in-depth resources that are affordable for students across the globe."
The company was founded in 2004, when, according to the About page, David Harper launched an early version of its interactive e-learning platform to help FRM candidates around the world pass, built on its own content and an online discussion forum. The page headline says it has been preparing candidates for over 20 years, and David Harper still answers questions on the forum. Testimonials also thank a colleague named Nicole by first name.
For readers coming from finance and investing courses rather than exam prep, the FRM curriculum is itself a thorough risk management education: quantitative analysis, financial markets and products, valuation and risk models, and market, credit, operational and liquidity risk. The shop page describes the FRM as the most respected designation for financial risk and says certified FRMs are employed by almost every major global bank, government regulator, consulting firm, insurance and financial services institution around the world.
What the Courses Cover
The shop page sets out the two parts of the exam and the topics each Bionic Turtle course follows.
FRM Part I:
- Foundations of Risk Management
- Quantitative Analysis
- Financial Markets and Products
- Valuation and Risk Models
FRM Part II:
- Market Risk Measurement and Management
- Credit Risk Measurement and Management
- Operational and Integrated Risk Management
- Liquidity and Treasury Risk Measurement and Management
- Risk Management and Investment Management
- Current Issues in Financial Markets
The shop page says the curriculum "is continuously revised to stay current," and the About page adds that materials are crafted by industry experts, CFA Charterholders and finance professionals.
What a Candidate Gets
The About page lists the materials included with the courses:
- Expert-led live online Part 1 review sessions
- A structured study planner
- Practice question sets
- Study notes
- Instructional and focus review videos
- Interactive quizzes
- Learning spreadsheets
- A large, active online community forum
The study planner is the spine of the program. The shop page describes it as an organized planner that brings together "the largest and most diverse collection of FRM study materials including daily questions, instructional videos, learning spreadsheets, and more." The home page lists practice questions, quizzes, mock exams and supplemental videos within a personalized FRM study plan. Testimonials also mention "BT scripts" and global topic drills.
Two features stand out. The first is the learning spreadsheets: Excel workbooks that, according to the Why Bionic Turtle page, "illustrate almost all of the exam's quantitative concepts." The company says it is the first and only FRM provider with actionable learning spreadsheets, and says these are available to its professional-level customers. For a quantitative exam like the FRM, being able to change the inputs to a value-at-risk or bond pricing model and watch the result move is a real aid.
The second is the question bank. The Why page says the FRM question bank "is the deepest you'll find," with a focus on difficulty, and contrasts its "hand-crafted exam prep products" with "recycled, baseline questions." It describes the bank as "the bread and butter of your preparation process."
The Forum and Support
The forum is the other half of the product. The Why page calls it "the most active financial-risk forum on the planet," a place to get questions answered and discuss problems with other candidates and the company's experts, and says Bionic Turtle experts, including founder David Harper, constantly provide feedback there. The shop page says staff offer personalized learning support and that "our active forum community is available 24/7 to help you master the FRM."
This matters for an exam where candidates often get stuck on a single derivation or a disputed practice question. A self-study candidate gets somewhere to take that question rather than working alone.
What Learners Say
Testimonials on the site are attributed by first name and initial. Shu C. wrote that they "scored in the top quartile of every topic and I absolutely could not have done this without using BT" after many hours on the practice questions and answers Ivan J. wrote that "The BT scripts, practice questions, global topic drills and mock exams were a great help in understanding the concepts." Feras S., a mechanical engineer who moved from petroleum services into financial risk management, wrote that he passed both parts the first time. Another learner said he did not buy the GARP books for Part II and relied on Bionic Turtle materials alone.
The site's own claims are broad: the home page says "Thousands have used our study materials, active community, and friendly support to successfully pass," the shop page says "Hundreds have passed the toughest financial exam on the planet with the help of our risk curriculum," and the Why page claims a "higher pass rate for candidates who successfully complete our study program" without giving a number. The footer carries GARP's standard disclaimer that GARP does not endorse Bionic Turtle's products or any pass rates it may claim.
Pricing, Sign-Up and Partnerships
The pages read here do not show course prices; the shop page leads to separate FRM Part I and Part II shop pages, and the site header offers a free sign-up and a cart. For organizations, the home page describes corporate partnerships ("Bionic Turtle is a trusted partner, providing your team members with the latest and most important resources") and university partnerships, offering custom exam prep courses that can stand alone or add to an existing program. The resources menu adds an FAQ, a blog, newsletters, videos and an In The News page.
Who It Suits
Bionic Turtle suits FRM candidates who study on their own around a job and want deep question practice, a planner that tells them what to do each day, and a place to ask an expert when a question does not make sense. Quantitatively minded candidates will get the most from the Excel learning spreadsheets. Part I candidates who want some live teaching have the expert-led online review sessions. Banks, consultancies and universities putting several people through the FRM can use the corporate and university partnership routes. Because the product covers only the FRM, a candidate also preparing for the CFA or another credential will need a second provider for that exam.
