What It Is

Treehouse is an online school for coding and tech skills, teaching through short video lessons, a browser-based coding environment, quizzes and code challenges. Its About page says it has run "Since 2011" and describes it as "a leading online learning platform that teaches coding, web development, design, AI, and data science", with figures of 1.2M+ learners, 190 countries, 3K+ organizations served and 15 years of impact. The company behind it is Treehouse Island, Inc.

It serves three kinds of reader. Individual learners subscribe to the course library or a Techdegree bootcamp. Businesses, nonprofits, schools and libraries buy seats through Treehouse for Businesses. And many people reach it at no cost: the site says Treehouse "is also available for free through participating public libraries nationwide."

The Course Library

The site describes "300+ courses spanning web development, Python, data analysis, UX design, and AI", and the plan comparison counts over 15,000 learning videos and 50+ guided learning tracks. The About page lists the technologies taught: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, React, SQL, Python and Java under programming; AI, machine learning and no-code; and design, UX and accessibility. The business page adds APIs, databases, security, Ruby and PHP.

Course cards show length and popularity. Python Basics runs 234 minutes and shows 52,091 students; JavaScript Basics also runs 234 minutes, with 35,079 students; SQL Basics is 173 minutes with 52,059 students; Computer Basics is 55 minutes with 94,977 students. React Basics, Introduction to HTML and CSS, and Intro to Design Thinking round out the beginner set. An AI section carries short practical courses, several of them free: What is AI? What is ChatGPT?, Introducing Large Language Models, Build a Side Business with AI Tools, Build and Launch an App in 30 Minutes with Cursor, NoCode Prompt Engineering, and AI for Everyone, a 5-hour course on building AI tools without code.

Tracks are sequences of courses that build on each other. Examples include the free Learn to Code for Beginners track (2 hours), Front End Web Development (48 hours), Web Design (42 hours), Beginning JavaScript (20 hours, 26,176 students), Beginning SQL (11 hours, 40,879 students), Beginning Python (14 hours), Intermediate Python (11 hours) and Learn React (11 hours, 27,287 students).

College Credit

Some tracks carry college credit. The Cybersecurity track is a 14-hour beginner track that promises: "Learn security basics and earn 3 college credits!" A site banner says learners can "Earn college credits in Cybersecurity, JS, HTML, CSS and Python", and the site footer describes "ACE-credited college courses". The pages do not describe how those credits are accepted by a particular college.

Techdegree Bootcamps

A Techdegree is Treehouse's self-paced, project-based bootcamp. The FAQ says it is offered in five subjects: Front End Web Development, Full Stack JavaScript, Python Development, Data Analysis, and User Experience Design. Each program card lists a typical length: Python Development 2-5 months, Front End Web Development and Full Stack JavaScript 4-9 months each, UX Design and Data Analysis 3-8 months each. The sign-up page notes that every program now includes an AI project.

The FAQ describes the format as courses, hands-on projects, peer reviews and guided support from Treehouse staff, ending in a final exam, with a certificate that learners can share on LinkedIn. The plans page adds "graded code reviews from staff, a private Slack community, and a certificate when you finish", and the sign-up page lists an "Industry-recognized certificate", "1-on-1 mentor support" and graded projects. The About page describes real-time support "live on Discord, Slack, or Zoom" and guidance from graduate mentors, many of whom started as Treehouse students.

Plans and Prices for Individuals

Every individual plan starts with a free 7-day trial, and canceling during the trial costs nothing.

  • Courses costs $25 a month, or 20.83 a month billed annually (the page says this saves 17%). It covers the learning library: 15,000+ videos, interactive quizzes and code challenges, guided tracks and a peer support forum.
  • Courses Plus costs $49 a month, or 40.83 a month billed annually. It adds an "Exclusive, premium content library", career and interview prep talks, and bonus practice content; the FAQ says it also includes downloads and tech coaching.
  • Techdegree costs $199 a month, monthly only, and includes everything in Courses Plus plus the bootcamp features above. The plans page says learners "Finish in 3-9 months".

Plans can be upgraded, downgraded, paused or canceled at any time from account settings, with "no long-term contracts and no cancellation fees", and changes to paid plans take effect at the next billing cycle. Payment is by credit or debit card or PayPal. Treehouse for Military offers a program for active-duty service members, veterans and military families, and the site mentions financial aid scholarships.

Treehouse for Businesses

The business product gives organizations the same library with admin tools. The FAQ says admins get "in-depth learning analytics for every team member, broken down by organization, department, or individual", can assign curriculum with or without due dates, run exportable reports, monitor comprehension through quiz and code challenge results, and use badges and leaderboards. Larger organizations can split the account into departments, each with an admin who sees only their group. Custom modules combine Treehouse courses, workshops and practice sessions with an organization's own onboarding material, videos and assessments uploaded into the platform.

On pricing, the business page says it "begins at $199 per seat per year". The sign-up form splits it by organization type: $299 per seat per year for a company or business, and $199 per seat per year for a nonprofit, school or library. Teams needing more than 10 seats are asked to contact Treehouse for custom pricing. Team plans include free admin seats for managers, seat reassignment at any time, and a dedicated client manager with priority support. Payment can be by credit card or invoice, there is no cap on seats, and a 7-day free trial is offered to teams as well. The business page names nonprofits that use Treehouse, such as Operation Code for veterans and military families and AnitaB.org, and a school that uses it across grades 6 through 12.

Mission

The site states its mission as "to diversify the tech industry through accessible education", and the About page adds that "creating a more inclusive workforce takes more than access". The About page says Treehouse offers discounts for low-income learners, military members and teachers, and partners with nonprofits to provide free subscriptions.

Who It Suits

Treehouse suits beginners and career changers who learn well from short videos with practice built in, and who want a clear sequence rather than a catalog to sort through. The $25 Courses plan is a low-cost way to start, and a library card may make it free. Learners who want structure, mentor support and a certificate for a portfolio can step up to a Techdegree, and those who want credit toward a college program can look at the credit-bearing tracks.

Organizations, schools and libraries get a straightforward per-seat product with progress reports and custom modules. The material centers on web development, Python, data, design and practical AI, so engineers looking for advanced or specialist topics will find less here, and everything is self-paced, so learners who need scheduled live classes should weigh that.
