What Linux Foundation Training Is
Linux Foundation Training and Certification is the education arm of The Linux Foundation: a catalog of certification exams, self-paced e-learning, instructor-led courses, short skill credentials and subscriptions built around open source technology. It is aimed at IT professionals and people starting an IT career who want a credential in Linux, Kubernetes and the wider cloud native stack, and at organizations training teams in those skills. The home page frames its certifications as "Respected, verifiable certifications from a vendor-neutral entity like The Linux Foundation" that "demonstrate the depth of your skills to potential employers, most of whom report they are more likely to hire someone holding such a certification."
The site is available in English and Japanese, a separate China training site serves learners there, and the catalog carries Japanese-language versions of several exams.
What the Catalog Covers
The catalog can be searched by technology area: Cloud & Containers, System Administration, Cybersecurity, AI & ML, Emerging Technologies, Networking, Blockchain & Decentralized Identity, Linux Kernel Development, IoT & Embedded Development, Web & Application Development, Systems Engineering, DevOps & Site Reliability, and Open Source Best Practice. The catalog's filter panel counts the products by type: Training (150), Certification (79), SkillCred (10), Express Learning (15) and Subscription (22). By delivery method it lists e-Learning (146), Instructor-Led (35) and Free e-Learning (62). Cloud & Containers is the largest area, with 103 items, followed by Cybersecurity (52) and System Administration (51).
The technology filter shows the spread, with Kubernetes (56), Linux (46) and RISC-V (11) among the larger groups, and smaller sets for PyTorch, Prometheus, Istio, Cilium, Argo, OpenTelemetry, Hyperledger, Helm, Docker, DevSecOps and Model Context Protocol (MCP). The home page sums up the instructor-led side as "From Linux and Kubernetes to Cybersecurity, PyTorch, Rust, and more, we offer the expert-led courses you need," under the line "Live instructor learning is the gold standard."
Certifications
Certifications are the center of the catalog. In system administration, the entry points are the Linux Foundation Certified IT Associate (LFCA) at $250, for those "new to the industry," and the Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS) at $445. The Kubernetes exams sit at the core: Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) and Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS), each listed at $445.
A row of associate-level exams sits at $250 each, among them Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate (KCNA), Kubernetes and Cloud Native Security Associate (KCSA), Prometheus Certified Associate (PCA), Istio Certified Associate (ICA), Certified Argo Project Associate (CAPA), Certified Backstage Associate (CBA), Cilium Certified Associate (CCA), Kyverno Certified Associate (KCA), OpenTelemetry Certified Associate (OTCA), Certified Cloud Native Platform Engineering Associate (CNPA), Certified Open Source Developer for Enterprise (CODE) and RISC-V Foundational Associate (RVFA). The Certified Cloud Native Platform Engineer (CNPE) is $445. The catalog also lists exams for Hyperledger Fabric, Besu, GitOps, FinOps and the FINOS standards.
Above single exams sit the Kubestronaut programs, which the catalog says recognize "community leaders who have consistently invested in their ongoing education." The Kubestronaut Bundle is $1645, the Golden Kubestronaut Bundle $4229, and upgrade bundles are $1235 (from CKA or CKAD to Kubestronaut) and $2669 (Kubestronaut to Golden). Multi-exam bundles include CKA plus CKAD for $825, CKA plus CKS for $825, and all three Kubernetes exams for $1245. Certificates can be checked through a Verify Certification page, and the site issues digital badges.
Courses and Exam Bundles
Paid courses carry LF course codes. Examples from the catalog: Kubernetes Fundamentals (LFS258), Kubernetes Security Essentials (LFS260) and Implementing DevSecOps (LFS262), each Intermediate at $299, and Kubernetes for Developers (LFD259). Free introductions include Introduction to Kubernetes (LFS158), Introduction to Istio (LFS144) and Introduction to Cilium (LFS146), and short Express Learning modules such as XSS Exploits and Defenses are listed at $0. Open Source Best Practice courses like Collaborating Effectively with Open Source Projects (LFC207) cost $79.
Course-plus-exam bundles pair a course with its exam at $299, for example Fundamentals of Open Source IT and Cloud Computing (LFS200) with the LFCA exam, Kubernetes and Cloud Native Essentials (LFS250) with KCNA, Monitoring Systems and Services with Prometheus (LFS241) with PCA, and Istio Service Mesh Essentials (LFS245) with ICA.
SkillCreds
SkillCreds are short, low-cost credentials for single tools. The catalog lists them at $79 each: Text Editing with Vim (SC100), Open Data Formats: YAML (SC101), Source Control Management with Git (SC102), Shell Scripting Using Bash (SC103), Developing Helm Charts (SC104), Open Data Formats: JSON (SC105), Pipelines with Tekton (SC106), Pattern Matching with Regular Expressions (SC107), Formatting with Markdown (SC108) and Containers with Docker (SC109). Each "demonstrates a user's foundational knowledge and skills" in that tool.
THRIVE-ONE Subscription
The subscription is pitched on the home page as "THRIVE with unlimited access to e-Learning courses PLUS gain access to All SkillCreds with Annual Subscription!" The catalog sells it bundled with an exam. Bundles with CKA, CKAD, CKS, LFCS or CNPE cost $625 and give "access to more than 100 educational products," while bundles with the associate exams (LFCA, KCNA, KCSA, PCA, ICA, CAPA, CBA, CCA, KCA, OTCA, CNPA, CGOA, RVFA, CODE and others) cost $495 and include "unlimited e-Learning, SkillCred exams, digital badges, and more." The catalog's Subscription filter lists 22 products, and organizations have a Corporate Subscription option.
For Organizations and Career Planning
For companies, the site lists Corporate Solutions, Learning Solutions, Delivery Options, Government Solutions, Security Workshops and Member Benefits, a "Get Instant Quote" link, and a presence on AWS Marketplace. Instructor-led training also runs through a Regional Class Schedule and a Training Partner Program.
For individuals planning a path, the site offers Learning Paths, an IT Career Roadmap, an IT Certification Journey and a Career Path Quiz, plus a Cybersecurity Skills Framework that, in the home page's words, aligns "IT job roles with practical cybersecurity skills." Resources include free courses, webinars, a blog and an annual State of Tech Talent Report. The home page cites its own research claim that "93% of hiring managers are unable to find enough individuals with open source skills." There are also scholarships, academic resources, an affiliate program and a Tux Rewards program.
Who It Suits
Linux Foundation Training suits a system administrator, developer or platform engineer who wants a recognized open source credential, especially for Kubernetes, where CKA, CKAD and CKS are the core exams. A newcomer can start with free introductions and the LFCA, or a $299 course-and-exam bundle. Someone planning several credentials gets more from a THRIVE-ONE bundle, which adds a year of e-learning and SkillCreds to one exam. Teams and public-sector organizations have corporate and government options and regional instructor-led classes.
It suits a casual learner less well: the catalog is organized around exams, and most of the value is in certification prep rather than general coding lessons. The subscription is shown only bundled with an exam, so learners who want e-learning without an exam should check the Subscriptions page.
