What CodeChef is
CodeChef is a coding practice, learning and contest platform for students and early-career developers who want to get good at programming by solving problems. Its home page pitches it as "Bored of Theory? Let's Code for Real" and invites visitors to "Join 5M+ students building projects, cracking contests, and landing internships." A global presence section counts 10M+ users, 200M+ submissions and 150+ countries. The footer gives an office address in Manyata Tech Park, Bengaluru, and the copyright reads CodeChef Inc. The product has four parts: courses and roadmaps, practice problems, coding contests, and an online compiler, with an AI Mentor running through all of them.
Courses, roadmaps and career paths
The catalog splits into Programming and DSA roadmaps, described as "Learn to think like a programmer", and Career Paths, "From beginner to job-ready". Each roadmap card shows its rating, number of courses and learner count. The language-plus-DSA roadmaps are the backbone. Python with Beginner DSA has 6 courses and 451k+ learners. Java with Beginner DSA has 6 courses, 350k+ learners and "600+ handpicked coding problems". C++ with Beginner DSA has 6 courses, 267k+ learners and 500+ problems, C language with Beginner DSA has 7 courses, 290k+ learners and 600+ problems, and JavaScript with Beginner DSA has 7 courses, 173k+ learners and 500+ problems. Learn Data Structures and Algorithms is the largest by course count, with 23 courses, 125k+ learners and "over 450 problems in total" on linked lists, stacks, queues, trees, graphs and more.
The career paths are built around projects. Python Backend Developer, with 8 courses and 178k+ learners, promises to "Master Python for backend development with a focus on fundamentals, frameworks, databases, and APIs. Build projects every step of the way to showcase your backend skills." Java Backend Developer has 7 courses and 238k+ learners. React JS for Front-end development has 4 courses and 178k+ learners and covers JSX, components, state management, hooks and side effects. The Frontend Roadmap using HTML, CSS and JS has 6 courses and 90k+ learners. For data, the SQL Roadmap for Data Analysis has 6 courses, 107k+ learners and "over 200+ query-related exercises" built on real-world case studies; Data analysis using Python covers NumPy, Pandas and Matplotlib across 4 courses; and Machine Learning using Python covers NumPy, Pandas and Scikit-learn across 8 courses with 50k+ learners. An AI Machine Learning Basics roadmap is marked coming soon.
For contest-minded learners, the Competitive Programming roadmap, subtitled "Become 5 star", has 7 courses and 105k+ learners and promises to help learners "Move from 1 to 5 stars in programming contests using our guided method."
Practice, contests and the compiler
Practice problems are sorted by difficulty, and the site says learners can "Explore 30+ languages and technologies" with smart tips from the AI tutor. Projects cover full stack development and data science.
Contests are what CodeChef is best known for. The site invites learners to "Join contests at global, national, and even college levels", climb leaderboards, and "Win rewards, certificates, and internship opportunities". The FAQ explains the process: "Log in, visit the 'Compete' section, and sign up for a contest that suits you", solve problems in the online compiler, submit, and check the leaderboard afterwards. Learners follow their progress through a personalized dashboard showing "course completions, contest scores, and overall performance".
The online compiler lets anyone "Code, Test & Debug Instantly in any Language", including HTML and React compilers for building web apps, with AI-driven debugging. Dedicated compiler pages exist for HTML, C++, C, Java, Python, SQL, JavaScript and React. For employers, the company menu links to a Hire from us page, and the home page shows a strip of companies where its course graduates are working, under the line "Delivering job ready developers".
The AI Mentor gives "step-by-step explanations, debugging help, and personalized learning guidance". The FAQ calls it "your instant helper for tough coding problems, offering real-time explanations, debugging tips, and suggestions to keep you moving forward."
Plans and prices
The pricing section shows three plans. The Free Plan, "Limited Access", includes previews of learning content, free practice paths, limited access to AI and weekly contest access. The Pro Plan, "All courses + AI Mentor", costs $124 per year, with a monthly toggle also offered. It includes 18 guided roadmaps, 60+ premium courses, real-world projects, 5000+ practice problems, a 24/7 instant AI assistant, 5 streak freezes every month, a certificate for each course, smart test case analysis, skill tests, specialized interview prep paths, video solutions and hints, and an invite to the Pro community. Pro members can also extend their access by referring a friend. The FAQ sums up the difference: "Free courses give you essential lessons, practice problems, and community support. Premium courses offer advanced tutorials, real-time AI doubt resolution, personalized learning paths, and projects to help prepare you for in-demand industry roles." A "Try Before You Buy" feature lets learners "Experience premium courses for free before committing."
The Enterprise Plan, for colleges and universities, is priced on contact and adds customized learning paths, student, faculty and admin dashboards, and priority support. Institutions get AI mentor assistance, faculty training and workshops, a custom coding curriculum that integrates CodeChef courses into the syllabus, the option to host exclusive contests and hackathons, and what the site calls an "Industry Recognised Certificate". The process starts with a contact form and a free demo.
What learners say
The testimonials come mostly from Indian engineering students and working developers. Aditya Ojha of NIT Raipur says CodeChef "helped me build pattern recognition, spot edge cases, and optimize solutions under pressure." Dhruv Koli of IIIT-Dharwad writes: "Over the course of two years, CodeChef helped me progress from a Python newbie to a competitive coder." Deepak Kumar Bairwa of IIT Roorkee reports "Solving 577 problems and competing in 23 contests". Several reviewers single out the editorials and the fairness of contests. The page shows 4.4 ratings from 64k reviews.
Who it suits
CodeChef suits students and early-career developers who learn best by solving problems, especially those preparing for coding interviews or aiming to climb contest ratings. Beginners can start with a language-plus-DSA roadmap on the free plan, and the Pro plan's yearly price makes the full catalog, AI Mentor and course certificates affordable. Colleges that want to run structured coding programs and contests for their students have a dedicated enterprise plan. Learners who mainly want long video lectures should note that the platform is built around practice and contests rather than lectures.
