What AltSchool Africa is
AltSchool Africa is a fully online school that teaches technology, data, product, business and creative-economy skills to learners across Africa. Its home page calls it "Africa's Best Innovative Online School" and offers "flexible and accredited Degrees, full Diplomas, or Nano-Diplomas you can complete fast." The About page says the journey "began in 2021," when the team built "a fully-virtual platform where Africans, regardless of who they are can access global standard learning resources," and it names Adewale Yusuf as CEO and founder. The footer carries a TalentQL, Inc. copyright.
The name explains the pitch: the About page says AltSchool offers a more effective "alternative" to traditional academic institutions, built on "practical & functional learning with the aid of modern technology." Its stated goal is that "By the year 2030, we hope to have armed ten million Africans with profitable skills."
The reader is a learner: a student choosing what to study after secondary school, a working professional adding a skill, or a career switcher. The home page addresses all three directly: "Students! Professionals! Career Switchers!"
Four ways to study
AltSchool sells four formats, laid out side by side on the home page.
Masterclass. Bite-sized sessions of 1 to 3 hours on practical topics, "Perfect for busy professionals who want immediate results." They run as live sessions, physical or online, and come with no certification.
Nano-Diploma. A short program of 4 to 8 weeks, flexible and self-paced, delivered online with recorded lectures and ending in an AltSchool Nano-Diploma certificate. The home page says each one "comes with real-world projects" and a certificate to show an employer. Trending examples carry a credit value and a length: Music Marketing and Promotion (10 credits, 6 weeks), Music Copyright and Publishing (10 credits, 6 weeks), Data Analytics with Excel (12 credits, 6 weeks) and Launchpad by AltSchool (1 credit, 1 week), a career-readiness program for people choosing a career or struggling to land a first job.
Diploma. A 12-month, instructor-led program "with community and mentorship support," mixing live classes with recorded lectures and ending in an AltSchool Diploma certificate. The home page promises that in 12 months a learner will "master a new career path."
Degree. A university B.Sc. delivered through a partnership, described in the next section.
The tech and coding catalog
The coding side of the school sits mainly in the School of Engineering, which the site says builds "practical software, cloud, security, and AI-powered product skills for modern technical teams," and the School of Data.
Diplomas listed in the footer include AI-Powered Fullstack Engineering, Cloud Engineering, Cybersecurity, Data Analysis, Data Engineering and Data Science, alongside Technical Product Management and Digital Marketing Automation and Sales.
Nano-Diplomas for technical learners include Javascript for Beginners, SQL for Beginners, UI/UX Foundation, Data Modelling for Beginners, Foundations of Cybersecurity, two cybersecurity Nano-Diplomas, one on Identity and Access Management (IAM) and one on Networking and System Security. For the business and creative side there are Foundations of Product Management, High-Impact Selling: From Prospecting to Closing, Mobile Content Mastery for African Creators and Navigating the Music Business in Africa: Afrobeats case study.
The five schools are Engineering, Data, Product, Business and Creative Economy. That last one stands out: few coding schools also teach music copyright and Afrobeats marketing.
Degrees
The site offers four B.Sc. degrees: Business Information Technology (with a data analytics specialization) in the College of Business, and Software Engineering, Cybersecurity and Information Technology in the College of Technology. The navigation says the degrees are "Fully licensed and Accredited by the NUC," and the footer states "All Degree courses are accredited by NUC."
The Business Information Technology page explains how the degree works. It brings together "AltSchool Africa's practical learning model, American Open University of Nigeria's degree framework, and recognized accreditation signals." AltSchool delivers industry-aligned innovation courses, "while the curriculum, assessment, and award remain with the university." The program is online, takes 1 to 4 sessions, and admission "may be available into Years 1-4 depending on prior education, professional background, and credit eligibility." Applicants need secondary school credits including English Language and Mathematics, or relevant higher qualifications for direct entry.
The page publishes the full curriculum by level, from 100 Level courses such as Communication in English, Elementary Mathematics and Introduction to Computing Sciences, through Computer Programming, Introduction to Data Science and R Programming at 200 Level, Big Data Computing, Data Management and Machine Learning at 300 Level, to Final Year Projects at 400 Level. Additional innovation courses cover Python and R programming, statistical modeling, cloud computing for data science, an applied machine learning practicum and an industry certification track. The listed career outcomes include business analyst, data analyst, IT project manager and systems analyst.
Tuition depends on the learner's starting point. A calculator asks whether the applicant already holds an AltSchool Diploma and what their highest previous qualification is, then shows how many sessions they will take and the school fees. The page says "Application into the degree program is completely free," and lists the application fee line as "Flexible payment."
How learning works
The About page describes the method in a few principles. Learning is flexible: "Learn in your own space, at your own pace." It is communal: "We ensure learners are working together, sharing knowledge, and collaborating to enhance their understanding." And instructors "are carefully selected." The site also mentions "live classes, functional curriculums, expert tutors and peer-to-peer training sessions." It rejects "outdated curriculums, bulky lecture notes, and boring lectures" in favor of "interactive, relatable learning."
Accreditation and recognition
Beyond the NUC accreditation of the degree courses, the site says "AltSchool Africa is accredited by ASIC," which it spells out as the Accreditation Service for International Schools, Colleges, and Universities, and describes as "external quality assurance." It also cites GSV Cup Elite 200, which it says recognized AltSchool as one of the world's most innovative EdTech startups.
Funding, partners and support
The menus point to scholarships, including an NYSC Scholarship, a "Sponsor a learner" program, a refer-and-earn scheme, and a section where companies can hire graduates or collaborate with the school. The policies cover refunds, examinations and affiliates. Support is by email and phone.
What learners say
The home page collects social media posts from learners. One, from Eworld Tech, says "After some months of learning & reflecting, I've built crazy apps & won a hackathon." Another, from Thony, says the difference AltSchool made in product management comes down to "one word: structure." A third learner writes that he started a software engineering internship with an AI/ML startup in London after first learning HTML at AltSchool in early 2022.
Who it suits
AltSchool Africa suits African learners who want practical tech skills online at a pace that fits work or study, and who like a ladder they can climb: a short Nano-Diploma to test a field, a 12-month Diploma to change careers, and a degree for those who need a university qualification, with an AltSchool Diploma counting toward degree entry. It is a strong fit for aspiring software engineers, data analysts and cybersecurity learners, and unusually good for creatives who want the business side of music and content.
Learners who want a traditional campus experience will not find it here, since everything apart from some masterclasses is online. Degree applicants should use the tuition calculator to see their own sessions and fees before applying.
