What the product is

Portal Educação is a Brazilian online course catalog for adults who want professional training, a career change or a bit of extra income. Its About section describes it as "a maior plataforma EAD do Brasil" (the largest distance-learning platform in Brazil), with 20 years of experience, more than 1,300 courses, national recognition and membership of the UOL EdTech group, "com o propósito de democratizar a educação por meio da tecnologia" (with the aim of democratizing education through technology). The footer names the company behind it as UOL Cursos Tecnologia Educacional Ltda, based in São Paulo.

The home page puts its track record in three numbers: more than 6 million courses taken ("+6M Cursos Realizados"), more than 3 million people trained ("+3M Pessoas Qualificadas") and 50 awards received. It also shows an "Experience Certified" seal for NPS in the edtech category and an "O Cliente Recomenda" seal based on student recommendations, and says "Nossos cursos próprios são reconhecidos pelas ABED" (our own courses are recognized by ABED).

Courses are recorded and self-paced. The catalog copy says the professional courses are built "com foco em proporcionar uma capacitação profissional adequada" (with a focus on providing proper professional training), that the instructors are specialists, and that "ao final de cada curso você tem acesso a uma certificação" (at the end of each course you have access to a certificate).

The catalog

The menu splits the catalog into broad areas, each with subcategories:

  • Administração e Negócios (business and administration): human resources, sales, law, finance, data and statistics, leadership, logistics, entrepreneurship and accounting.
  • Educação (education): school management, environmental and religious education, tutoring, pedagogy, learning techniques and Libras, Brazilian sign language.
  • Saúde (health): psychology, nursing, physical education and sport, speech therapy, nutrition, physiotherapy, dentistry, veterinary and pet care, medicine, biomedicine and pharmacy.
  • Renda Extra (extra income): beauty and makeup, arts and crafts, aesthetics and therapies, cooking.
  • Idiomas (languages): the UOL English course 3.0 at basic, intermediate, advanced and complete levels, Spanish from basic to intermediate, and basic French.
  • Conhecimentos Gerais (general knowledge): maternity, the Normas Regulamentadoras (regulatory standards, with courses such as NR-06 on protective equipment), personal development, photography, home organization, music and fashion.
  • Comércio e Indústria, Marketing e Design, Tecnologia, Engenharia e Construção and Biologia round it out, with subjects from tourism and hotel management to e-commerce, software development, Office tools, networks and security, architecture and marine biology.

A few course titles show the range. In health there are Instrumentador Cirúrgico (surgical instrument technician), Medicina do Trabalho (occupational medicine), Feridas e Curativos (wounds and dressings) and Procedimentos Técnicos em Sala de Vacina (vaccination room procedures). In technology there are SCRUM, Extreme Programming, Java with JSP and Servlets, Kanban, digital security and two short courses on how artificial intelligence affects work. Workplace safety titles include NR-06 on personal protective equipment and NR-33 on confined spaces. A section of short talks by named speakers, such as a strategic thinking session with Eugenio Mussak and a negotiation session with José Ricardo Noronha, sits beside the longer courses, and "Palestras Gratuitas" (free talks) appears among the areas of interest.

The catalog page says there are three course levels, básico, intermediário and avançado (basic, intermediate and advanced), and that learners can filter by course hours and by price. New courses "são adicionados regularmente" (are added regularly).

Course length

Every course card carries a course load in hours ("carga horária"). The spread is wide. Many short courses run 2 or 3 hours, a typical professional course runs 60 or 80 hours, the English and Spanish courses run from 160 to 570 hours, and the longest on the catalog page, Gestor Hoteleiro (hotel manager), runs 700 hours. The catalog copy mentions courses from 3 hours up to 1500 hours.

Prices

Courses are sold one at a time, and every card shows a list price, a discounted price and an installment option. On the catalog and home pages every course shows a 40% discount. Typical pairs are:

  • R$39.99 down to R$23.99, or 4 installments of R$5.99, for the 2 to 3 hour short courses;
  • R$49.99 down to R$29.99, or 5 installments of R$5.99;
  • R$99.99 down to R$59.99, or 11 installments of R$5.45, for courses such as Spanish Basic and the English 3.0 levels;
  • R$149.99 down to R$89.99, or 12 installments of R$7.49, the most common price for 60-hour courses such as Estatística, Direito do Trabalho and Comércio Exterior;
  • R$199.99 down to R$119.99, or 12 installments of R$9.99, for 80-hour courses;
  • R$249.99 down to R$149.99, or 12 installments of R$12.49, for the longest courses, including the complete English course and Gestor Hoteleiro.

New customers see a banner with the coupon BEMVINDO10 for 10% off a first purchase, and signing up for the newsletter promises the same 10% off.

Alongside single courses, the menu lists Portal Play subscriptions: Portal Play PRO, Portal Play Expert and a series of Portal Play Especialista plans for specific health fields (nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, speech therapy, medicine, nutrition, dentistry, psychology, physical education and veterinary care). Course cards are labeled "Cursos Portal Play". Subscription prices are not on these pages.

Certificates

The home page says certificates become available after the learner finishes the course and passes the final assessment, where the course has one. A Certificados link in the footer leads to more detail.

Support and access

Students get a learner area ("Área do Aluno"), a tutorial on accessing courses, an FAQ, and a policy page on exchanges and returns ("Troca e Devolução"). Support runs through a WhatsApp line, 11 93040-6687, and a contact page. The site recommends using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. A security notice warns that Portal Educação has no partnership with companies or people who request courses in its name.

What students say

Reviews on the home page are short and specific. Maria Lucia Collier, who took a teaching planning course, liked being able to study at home at her own pace. Karolyne Correa Macedo says it is worth it for people without time for in-person courses or without them in their city. Rosana Mota da Silva calls the distance method fantastic for its flexible hours.

Who it suits and who it does not

Portal Educação suits Portuguese-speaking adults in Brazil who want a certificate with stated course hours in a practical field, often health, education, business or workplace safety, at a low price they can split into installments. The very short courses make it cheap to try a topic, and the subscription plans for health professions suit people who want many courses in one field.

It is a catalog of recorded vocational courses rather than a university. Learners who want live classes should look elsewhere, and a learner whose employer or professional body needs a specific accreditation should check how ABED recognition applies to their own requirement.
