Academy Europe

Tap a star to rate

Academy Europe calls itself a "European Open Online University" and, in its footer, "a distance e-learning university" that "provides high quality free courses in diploma and certificate programs." It is a free course catalog for individual learners: every course on the homepage is marked Free, the certificates are free too, and the site's pitch is to "promote your career online." The footer gives a postal address in Hambühren, Germany, a German phone number and an email address, and the copyright line names Academy Europe Ltd.

The offer in the site's words

The homepage banner lists five promises: "All courses are online and absolutely free," "Free accredited certification!," "Easy, Free, Open for everyone!," "Anytime from anywhere!" and "Join now, promote your career online!" Below it the site counts 50,000 online courses, 2,500,000 students and "Unlimited" course access.

A separate block advertises the Academy Europe MBA Program with its own list: "All MBA lessons are online and absolutely free," "Open Course Curriculum," "Diploma and transcription," and again open to everyone, anytime and from anywhere.

There is no paid tier anywhere on the two pages. The course page for Business Sales shows "Price: Free" next to a Start Now button.

The catalog

Courses are grouped into three credential types and a dozen subject areas. The homepage gives a course count for each:

  • Diploma Courses, Certificate Courses and E-Certificate Courses: over 10,000 courses each;
  • Engineering and Technology: over 3,067;
  • Business and Career, Medical, and Quality Standards: over 1,435 each;
  • Computer Science: over 1,251;
  • Politics and Laws, Art, Finance and Economy, and Science and Research: over 1,145 each;
  • Life Sciences, Professions and Services, and Social Science: over 1,125 each.

The featured courses show how wide that range is. In economics and business there are Economics Micro and Macro (described as a diploma program), Startup Success (built around John Bradberry's "6 Secrets to Startup Success"), Business Sales, International Marketing, International Finance, International Business Management, Conversion Rate Optimization, Digital Marketing and Amazon Digital Marketing. In computing there are SAP HANA, Logo Programming, Android Basics and Android Expert, Artificial Intelligence, Artificial Intelligence with Python, Artificial Neural Network, Software Engineering, Computer Fundamentals and C Programming Basics. Engineering and science titles include Pulse Circuits, Principles of Communication Systems, Microwave Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Basics, Plant Ecology and Aquatic Primary Production and Measurement Methods. The Quality Standards area covers standards documents, with courses such as IEC/PAS 62180 and ISO IEC 27001:2013 Information Technology. Classroom Management and Advanced Communication Skills round out the list.

The course descriptions give a sense of depth. SAP HANA covers the platform's architecture, data modeling, system administration and data provisioning. Plant Ecology works through how water, temperature and light affect plant growth and photosynthesis. Pulse Circuits starts from signal parameters such as rise time, fall time and duty cycle. Logo Programming is a guide to the Turtle graphics language used to teach programming to children, and Artificial Intelligence with Python touches on neural networks, natural language processing, machine learning, deep learning and genetic algorithms.

Each course card shows a named instructor and a student counter. Those counters vary a lot: Agile Project Management shows 2359, Economics Micro and Macro 436070, and Business Sales 8762226. Several courses show counts above the sitewide 2,500,000 students figure, so they are best read as the site's own per-course tallies rather than unique learners.

What a course looks like

The Business Sales course page shows the format. It lists an instructor, 9 lectures, 10 weeks' duration and the student count, and files the course under Certificate Courses, E-Certificate Courses, Business and Career, Professions and Services, Sales and "Courses in English." An overview explains that the course covers how to run business sales training in a professional setting, and the audience section says it is meant to help "first-time sales managers in conducting a sales training program efficiently." The only prerequisite is knowing your company's organizational model and reporting hierarchy.

The curriculum runs to 9 sections of one lesson each: an introduction, different skillsets, methods of training, styles of learning, core concepts of reinforcement, motivating agents as reinforcers, the significance of setting goals, the three P's (positive, personal and possible), and a RACI chart. Some course descriptions on the homepage include YouTube video links.

The instructor profile is worth reading closely. The page describes Andrea Neumann as "an artificial intelligence instructor and course content presenter at Academy Europe" who "supplements her knowledge in E-learning and Educational Technology by using AI and TTS elements." Several course descriptions are also phrased as summaries of a source text ("This course synthesizes the core principles..."), so learners should expect concise, text-led overviews rather than a live teacher.

Certificates

The course page explains what the certificate is and how to get it. In the site's words, "Academy Europe presents high-quality formal diplomas, certificates and e-certificates which are formal proof and recognition of accredited online courses," useful for "CVs, job applications and self improvements." The process is four steps: click "complete" at the end of each lesson, which activates a "finish course" link after the last lesson; clicking it finishes the course officially and activates the course's certificate page; the learner can then view and download the certificate online.

The site uses the word "accredited" but the two pages do not name an accrediting body; the menu has a separate Accreditation page that a learner can check.

Signing up and studying

Learners register, log in and track their courses under My Profile. Courses are self-paced and available "anytime from anywhere." The menu also links to Tutorials, an Education System page, Resources, a Certification page, a Brand Guideline, an Endorse Us page and a Delivery Policy, alongside the contact page.

Who it suits

Academy Europe suits self-directed learners who want a free, quick overview of a subject, from sales training and digital marketing to SAP HANA, engineering basics or an ISO standard, and who like the idea of downloading a certificate or diploma at the end. Because everything is free, there is no cost to trying several courses before settling on one. The free MBA program is an option for someone who wants a broad business curriculum without tuition.

It is less suited to learners who need a credential with a named accrediting body behind it, or who want instructor feedback, graded projects or live sessions. Anyone planning to use a certificate for a job application or further study should check the site's Accreditation page and whether the employer or institution recognizes it.
