NWEA

NWEA is a K-12 assessment and research organization whose main product is MAP Growth, an assessment that districts and schools use to measure student growth and guide instruction. It is a product for the school team rather than the individual learner: the buyers its site addresses are district and school leaders, state leaders and teachers. The home page headline is "The clearest picture of K–12 student growth", followed by "Make the right decisions with the most precise, trusted data". Under the heading "Trusted by educators worldwide" it gives four figures: 12400+ districts served, 50+ years of research, 149+ countries, and 13+ million K–12 students. The site's page title calls NWEA a "Leader in K-12 Assessment and Research", and the About menu describes it as "Your partner for responsive, evidence-based assessment and learning solutions."
The MAP Suite
The products sit together under the name MAP Suite. The site's own description is: "Powered by decades of research and trusted by millions, the MAP Suite delivers the most reliable, actionable data to guide smarter decisions for every student, in every grade, across every subject."
MAP Growth is the flagship assessment. The home page invites visitors to "Start with K–12 clarity" and calls it "the world's most valid and reliable assessment", a claim the company makes about its own product. In the district section the site says district leaders use it to support teachers in differentiating instruction and to "use shared evidence to guide where to invest", and that "MAP Growth gives you a more holistic view." Students reach it through a dedicated MAP Growth Student Login, and staff through the main MAP Growth login. The product resources menu lists MAP Growth Norms, which the company updates: a recent post, "Same scale, new reference: What's new in the 2025 MAP Growth norms", explains how the latest norms reflect where students are today. A webinar on the home page covers using the new standards view in Class Profile alongside Learning Continuum and Projected Proficiency, which shows the reporting views a teacher works with after a test: a class profile, a learning continuum and a projected proficiency measure. A "Tour Map Growth" link offers a walkthrough of the product before a sales conversation.
MAP Reading Fluency is the second assessment, with its own student login. On the home page it sits under the prompt "Focus on developing readers" and the action "Close reading gaps", so it is the product a school uses for early reading rather than for the full set of subjects.
The product resources menu also lists a Family Toolkit, offered in English and in Spanish as "Kit de herramientas de la familia" (family toolkit), for schools that share results with parents, and an "Approval by state" page for districts that need to know where the assessment is approved for use.
Professional learning and coaching
NWEA sells services alongside the assessments. The Professional Learning menu lists a Professional Learning Overview, MAP Growth Professional Learning, MAP Reading Fluency Professional Learning, and Instructional Coaching for Teachers, plus a Professional Learning Online login. The home page pitches this under "Turn strategies into practice" and "Sharpen your craft". The services menu also carries the Science of Reading Literacy Suite, described as a way to "Make meaningful, measurable instructional change and a lasting impact on student growth." For a district, the practical point is that training on reading the reports and coaching for teachers come from the same company as the test itself.
Connected solutions
The Solutions menu groups the offer by buyer: District & School, State, and By school type. A Connected Learning section lists Integrated Solutions, Instructional Connections and HMH Personalized Path, under the line "Products and services that work together to help your teachers and leaders make better instructional decisions every day." The home page ties this to "Deliver scalable, effective learning" and "Personalize growth".
Research and the National Dashboard
Research is the part of the site NWEA gives the most room. The Research menu covers NWEA Research, Measurement & Psychometrics, Research Publications, Our Experts and the MAP Growth National Dashboard, under the statement: "We pioneer educational research, assessment methodology, rigorous content, and psychometric precision to support teachers across the globe in the critical work they do every day." The home page recommends the dashboard "For real-time insights into how achievement and growth are shifting nationally", describing it as regularly updated and as giving leaders "immediate context for the patterns you're seeing" in their own results. The home page also features a research brief, "Chronic absenteeism: A continued impediment to academic recovery", which examines the relationship between chronic absenteeism and academic recovery from COVID-era disruptions to learning. Researchers and institutions can apply to become research partners through a form on the home page.
Resources for teachers and leaders
The Resources menu lists a Resource Center, a Research Library, the "Teach. Learn. Grow." education blog, and resources sorted for teachers, school and district leaders, and state leaders. Product support runs through NWEA Connection and the MAP Help Center. For leaders, the home page offers a guide titled "Adored by the board", aimed at anyone who has "left a school board meeting wishing you and your presentation had been more successful", which helps them present assessment results to a school board.
The blog writes about classroom practice as much as about NWEA's own products. A January 29, 2026 post by Kathy Dyer and Monica Rodríguez lists 75 digital learning tools and apps teachers can use for formative assessment and instruction, chosen on three criteria: tools that support a range of instructional strategies, that are "free or awful close to it (under $10 per year, where possible)", and that let both students and teachers take the activator role. The tools are other companies' products, grouped by purpose, from real-time checks for understanding to peer feedback and word clouds. The post ends by pointing teachers to an NWEA eBook titled "Making it work", on putting formative assessment to work in the classroom, and to formative conversation starters for math teachers, available for grades 2–8. A content disclaimer notes that views on the blog are the authors' own and do not necessarily represent NWEA's.
Buying and support
The home page shows no prices or plans. Its calls to action are "Ready to partner with us?" with a "Let's connect" contact route, a Sales link in the top navigation, and a Support link, which fits a product bought by districts and states rather than by an individual teacher signing up online. The About menu adds Leadership, News, Events, Careers and Policy & Advocacy pages, and visitors can subscribe to a newsletter of news, blogs and resources.
Who it suits
NWEA suits a district, a state education agency, or a large school network that wants one growth measure across grades and subjects, with national norms to compare against, reading-specific assessment for younger students, and professional learning to help teachers act on the results. Leaders who present to a board, track recovery after disrupted years, or want national context from the dashboard get material built for them. It is not a quiz maker for a single teacher who wants to write a quick classroom check: for that, NWEA's own blog points teachers to dozens of free or low-cost tools from other companies, while MAP Growth and MAP Reading Fluency are sold through a sales conversation to schools and districts.
