What LectureOwl is

LectureOwl is a marketplace for private online music lessons. It connects students with independent music teachers who give live, one-on-one lessons over video. A student uses the Find a Teacher section to choose an instructor and set up lessons; a musician applies to teach and, once accepted, gets a profile on the site that students can book. The homepage sums up the offer as "Any Instrument, Any Skill Level, Any Style, Any Time."

That makes it a tutoring service rather than a course library. LectureOwl does not sell recorded courses or a fixed curriculum. What a student learns is worked out between student and teacher, lesson by lesson, which is how private music teaching has always worked, only moved online.

The product serves two readers at once. For a learner it is a way to find a private music teacher without being limited to whoever teaches nearby. For a musician it is a way to earn money teaching online without building a website, finding students alone or chasing payments. The site states its vision as helping "musicians make a living doing what they love, while helping even more people around the world learn and enjoy the gift of music," and says it hopes to help pass knowledge from experts on to the next generation.

Instruments and teachers

Teachers are grouped into seven areas: Piano, Guitar, Vocal, Percussion, Strings, Horns and Woodwind, and Music Theory. Between them these cover the common lesson requests: keyboard players, guitarists, singers, drummers, players of bowed strings and wind instruments, and students who want to understand harmony and notation rather than learn a particular instrument. The homepage promises lessons for any skill level and any style, so a beginner and an advanced player can use the same search.

The homepage describes its instructors as "world class, expert teachers" and lists "Multiple Languages" among its selling points, which helps a student who wants lessons in their own language. Every teacher on the site has passed the same application: a form, a trial lesson or interview, a background check and a check of their profile before it goes live. The qualifications page sets the entry bar at one year of teaching experience, at least two years of learning experience, or a demonstrated aptitude on the instrument and working knowledge of music.

How lessons work for students

Lessons are private and live. In the site's words, students and teachers "meet for lessons online through video conferencing services such as Skype for personalized, one on one music lessons, from the safety and comfort of home." The equipment list is short: "a good internet connection, and a computer or tablet with a webcam and microphone." There is no travel to a studio and no need to have a teacher come to the house, and the homepage advertises lessons at any time, so lessons can fit around work or school.

A student can try a teacher before committing. "Free Trial Lessons Available" is one of the homepage's headline points, and the site also has a Free Lessons page and a Book Now option. For a student this is the most useful part of the model: the right teacher matters more than anything else in private lessons, and a trial lesson is the only reliable way to tell whether a teacher's style suits you.

Lessons are paid in advance. The teacher page explains that students must prepay, that payments run through a secure payment system, and that LectureOwl has a 24 hour cancellation policy. The site publishes no standard lesson price, because each teacher sets their own rate, so cost depends on the teacher a student books. LectureOwl also sells gift cards, which lets someone pay for lessons as a present.

For families, the site says it is COPPA compliant, "for greater security for children, and peace of mind for parents." That, together with the background check every teacher completes, is relevant to a parent booking online lessons for a child. The homepage also lists "Mental Health and Developmental Benefits" and "Music Lasts a Lifetime" among its reasons to learn.

Teaching on LectureOwl

The teacher side is laid out on the Apply to Teach page, which lists ten benefits. Signing up is free: there is no cost to apply or to have a profile on the website. Teachers set their own rates, and LectureOwl charges 20% on the price the teacher sets. Students prepay, so a teacher does not have to worry about not being paid after a lesson, and payment goes through a secure system. The 24 hour cancellation policy is presented as a way for teachers to plan their schedules.

On finding students, LectureOwl says it is "consistently marketing, so as to grow our community, and help teachers reach the students that are looking for them," and points out that teaching online reaches a much larger group of students than a local studio. It also pitches teaching from home as a relief from having strangers come into your home or sitting in traffic between lessons. COPPA compliance appears on this list too, since many students on a music lesson site are children. The company's stated attitude is "We succeed when you succeed," whether a teacher wants a little extra income or a full living from teaching.

Applying takes four steps. A teacher fills out the application form; if they are a good fit, LectureOwl schedules a trial lesson or interview and has them complete a background check; after that it verifies their profile content and sets them up in its system; and the teacher is placed on the website, ready to teach. A Setting up to Teach Guide, a FAQ covering teaching contracts and costs, and separate terms of use for teachers sit alongside the application, and questions go to support@lectureowl.com.

Who it suits

LectureOwl suits learners who want a real teacher rather than a recorded course: a beginner who needs someone to correct technique from the first lesson, an adult returning to an instrument, a singer who needs live feedback on their voice, or a parent looking for a vetted teacher for a child, with the COPPA statement and background checks on their side. The free trial lessons make it easy to try more than one teacher before settling on one, and the range of instruments means a family with children learning different instruments can use one service.

It suits teachers who want students without running their own business infrastructure: a musician starting to teach, a teacher moving lessons online, or someone who wants extra income around a performing career. Applying costs nothing, rates are the teacher's own, and prepayment removes the risk of unpaid lessons.

The trade-offs follow from the model. A learner who wants a structured, self-paced course with videos and exercises will not find one here, because LectureOwl is built around live lessons with one teacher. And an established teacher with a full studio of their own students may find the 20% charge less attractive than for a teacher who needs LectureOwl's marketing to find students in the first place.
