What it is

UPOU MODeL, short for Massive Open Distance eLearning, is "the official MOOC platform of the University of the Philippines Open University". The welcome text sets out the offer in one line: "Advancing quality education and lifelong learning through free, self-paced courses that you can take anytime, anywhere." A learner creates an account, logs in to a personal dashboard, and enrolls in courses from there. The side menu shows how the platform is organized: Home, MOOCs Schedule, Dashboard, FAQs, UPOU Helpdesk, Tech Support and Certificates.

The platform makes three promises on its home page. Under Universal Accessibility, it says its MOOCs use Open Educational Resources (OERs) "designed to cater to different learning styles", stored in UPOU Networks, the university's online repository of multimedia resources. Under Quality MOOCs, it says that with "UPOU's brand of MOOC, you are assured of free, relevant, quality courses." And under About UPOU, it describes the parent university.

The university behind it

The University of the Philippines Open University was established on 23 February 1995. Both the MODeL site and the university's main site say it "pioneered in online teaching and learning and continues to play a leading role in the study and practice of open learning and distance education in the Philippines." The main site adds that UPOU is envisioned as a leader in teaching and learning in the digital age, helping to equip Filipinos with the knowledge and skills they need for life and work in the 21st century.

UPOU has three faculties, each linked from the MODeL page. The Faculty of Education offers degree programs in teacher training. The Faculty of Information and Communication Studies offers programs in Multimedia Studies, Computer Science, Information Systems and Development Communication. The Faculty of Management and Development Studies was established in 2004 when the former Faculties of Health Sciences and of Management Studies merged. Its headquarters is in Los Baños, Laguna.

The catalog

The home page groups courses into categories and certification series, each with a course count:

  • Open Distance eLearning (ODeL), over 120 courses
  • OU Pahinungód Programs, over 67 courses
  • 2025 Certificates, over 64 courses
  • Child Rights Protection and Promotion, over 56 courses
  • Technology for Teaching and Learning, over 53 courses
  • 2026 Certificates, over 38 courses
  • Educational Media Production, over 23 courses
  • Fundamentals of Resilience, over 20 courses
  • Sustainable Development, over 12 courses

A second category menu adds UPOU Multimedia Center Online Training Programs, UPOU-CHED Training Programs for HEI Teachers, a bridge program called "Kahandaan, Kasanayan at Kaalaman" (readiness, skills and knowledge), UPOU Initiatives, and MOOC Offerings with UPOU Partners. The weight of the catalog is clear from these names: much of it serves teachers, schools and public-service work, alongside general subjects.

The MODeL News feed shows how the calendar is announced. A January 2025 post promised "45 FREE MOOCs covering a wide range of topics", naming courses such as "Identifying Red Flags", "Creativity and Innovation" and "What Makes an Entrepreneur?", plus trending topics such as Artificial Intelligence.

Featured courses

The featured offerings on the home page give a good sense of the range and of how the schedule works, since most carry run dates:

  • Introduction to Distance Education (2024) previews what it is like to be a MODeL learner and explains how UPOU delivers its courses.
  • E-Guro Introductory Course in Teaching K to 3 Learners (5 Sept to 5 Oct 2026) aims to strengthen the capacity of K to 3 teachers in early childhood education and special education through regular professional development activities.
  • Understanding Parts of Speech, Mathematical Foundations and Introductory Physics (each 28 Sept to 20 Nov 2026) cover correct usage of the parts of speech in writing and speech, essential secondary mathematics applied to real-life problems, and classical and modern physics with a focus on concepts, computations and problem-solving.
  • Quality Assurance in Open Distance eLearning (7 Sept to 2 Oct 2026) covers basic quality concepts in ODeL and models for evaluating it.
  • Research Ethics: Fundamental Concepts and Review Process (1 to 30 October 2026) uses structured learning materials, interactive exercises and focused community discussions to promote ethical awareness and compliance.
  • Learner Support in Open Distance eLearning (5 to 30 October 2026) discusses effective learner support in ODeL institutions.
  • Implementing and Evaluating Programs for Child Rights (6 to 31 October 2026) covers initiating, following through and evaluating child rights programs.
  • Overview of Policies and Strategies for Climate and Disaster Resilience and Resilience Strategies Across the Four Pillars (both 13 October to 10 November 2026) deal with disaster risk reduction and building resilience across governance, economic, social and environmental pillars.

How learning works

Courses are free and self-paced, but they run in set windows published on a yearly MOOC calendar, so a learner signs up for a course while it is open and works through it at their own speed before it closes. The site links to its 2026 MOOC Calendar, an Endorsement of MOOCs page, an FAQ, and a page on accessing the courses by phone.

Account creation is confirmed by email, after which learners log in with the credentials provided at registration. One older notice on the news feed asked for patience with confirmation emails during a surge in sign-ups, a sign of how popular the free calendar can be when it opens.

Certificates

Completing a course earns an e-certificate. The 2025 calendar post puts it this way: learners can "earn e-certificates, which you can include in your résumé as 16-hour training." The Certificates link in the menu and the 2025 and 2026 Certificates series in the catalog organize those offerings.

Support

Help comes in several forms. Openg, which the site calls "our wise companion chatbot", sits in the bottom right corner of the screen to answer questions about the courses. The menu links to the UPOU Helpdesk and to Tech Support, the team can be reached at model@upou.edu.ph, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (GMT+8), and a MODeL Facebook page carries updates.

Who it suits

UPOU MODeL suits teachers and education workers first. The ODeL, Technology for Teaching and Learning, Educational Media Production and CHED teacher-training categories, along with courses like E-Guro, give them free professional development from a university that specializes in distance education. People working in child protection or disaster planning will find the child rights and resilience tracks directly useful. General learners can brush up on grammar, secondary mathematics or physics, or try topics like entrepreneurship and creativity, and come away with a certificate for their résumé.

The main caveat is timing. Most courses carry fixed run dates on the calendar, so learners need to plan around those windows rather than starting any course on any day.
