What it is

Politécnico de Suramérica, which calls itself Polisura, is a Colombian training institute with two kinds of study under one roof. The first is a large catalog of free online courses and diplomas (diplomados) in Spanish, where enrollment, the virtual classroom and the course itself cost nothing and the learner pays only for a certificate. The second is a set of technical labor programs (programas técnicos laborales) that take a year or more and are taught in person at campuses in Medellín and Itagüí or online in live sessions. The footer gives its main campus as Calle 48B in Medellín, near the Suramericana metro station, lists a campus in Itagüí and a United States office in Fort Lauderdale, and states that it operates under a license granted by resolution of the Secretaría de Educación de Medellín, the city's education department, which also supervises it. For a learner, Polisura is mostly about the free diplomas; for someone after a vocational qualification, it is a technical school.

The free online courses and diplomas

The home page headline is "Cursos Virtuales Gratis y Diplomados Online Certificados" (free online courses and certified online diplomas), and the institute says it offers "más de 500 cursos con certificado y más de 20 programas técnicos" (more than 500 courses with certificates and more than 20 technical programs). The catalog is grouped into areas that each have their own section: business, finance, health, theology and philosophy, human resources, education, engineering, environment and judicial studies. A "¿Qué quieres aprender?" (what do you want to learn?) panel points to electricity, digital marketing, programming, artificial intelligence, sports training, graphic design, Excel, veterinary care, health, teaching, logistics, accounting, theology, law, human resources, administration, property management and workplace safety.

The featured courses give a sense of the range: artificial intelligence, blood transfusion, advanced life support, basic life support (BLS), radiological safety and protection, digital marketing, document management and archives, sports management, university teaching, psychosocial care for victims (PAPSIVI), auditing and internal control, and comprehensive care for victims of sexual violence. The FAQ says there are courses for every level, professionals included.

The programming page shows how a diploma is built. The Python diploma runs in four units, from fundamentals (installation, syntax, data types, control flow) through structured and modular programming and object-oriented programming to practical applications in web development, data analysis, visualization, automation and AI. The Java diploma also has four units, ending with data structures, graphical interfaces, threads and design patterns. Alongside them sit a series of cybersecurity diplomas, covering ethical hacking, cyberattack and cyberdefense, information security principles and regulation, vulnerabilities and penetration testing (with the OWASP guide, Nessus and OpenVAS named in the syllabus), and network security, plus two blockchain diplomas, one of them on crypto assets and decentralized finance.

How study works

According to the home page, all online courses and diplomas last three weeks, the FAQ repeats the three weeks for diplomas, and the courses are "disponibles 24/7 en nuestro campus virtual" (available around the clock on the virtual campus). The programming FAQ gives a different measure for that area, saying each programming course or diploma takes about 120 hours. Study is online and self-paced, which the programming page describes as giving students "flexibilidad para estudiar a su propio ritmo y desde cualquier lugar con conexión a internet" (flexibility to study at their own pace from anywhere with an internet connection). Learners are not on their own: the home page promises guidance from experts on each topic in every diploma, and the programming FAQ lists the tutor's support among the things that are free.

There are no prerequisites for a diploma beyond interest in the subject, according to the FAQ. Enrolling means filling in a form and choosing a diploma, and once one course is finished a learner can sign up for others.

Certificates and what they cost

The model is spelled out on nearly every page: "La inscripción, acceso al aula virtual y todo el proceso de formación es GRATIS; si deseas obtener tu certificado, debes realizar la inversión por valor de $80.000COP | 25.00USD" (enrollment, access to the virtual classroom and the whole course are free; for the certificate you pay 80,000 Colombian pesos, or 25 US dollars). The programming FAQ adds that the dollar price applies to learners outside Colombia. Asked whether anything else is charged on top, the FAQ answers "No se cargan conceptos adicionales" (no additional charges).

Getting the certificate takes five steps on the home page: pass the diploma by meeting its assessment criteria, pay for the certificate, send the payment receipt through the channel given, wait 24 business hours while the certificate is generated, and then log in with your ID number to download it as a PDF. The site has a "Reporta tu pago" (report your payment) link and a page of payment methods for this purpose.

The technical labor programs

The technical programs are a different product, with tuition and a formal admission process. In Medellín the home page lists administrative assistant, warehouse logistics assistant, personnel and occupational risk assistant, graphic design assistant, accounting assistant, marketing and sales assistant, human resources assistant, fitness and sports training instructor, and early childhood programs, and in Itagüí a veterinary clinic assistant and the fitness instructor program. The FAQ says every technical program lasts 2 semesters except veterinary assistant, which lasts 3, and that some allow a double qualification. On graduation the accounting and veterinary pages say students are certified with a "Certificado de Aptitud Ocupacional por Competencias como Técnico Laboral" (a certificate of occupational aptitude by competencies as a labor technician).

Several programs also run online. The virtual technical program in software is listed as "Virtual, sincrónico," one year long, with two live sessions a week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and modules on software development, backend with Python, frontend with JavaScript and web page development. The virtual fitness instructor program is also synchronous and lasts a year, with the schedule chosen by availability; its syllabus covers training plans, exercise programming, assessing sports technique and supervising sessions, plus cross-cutting modules on communication and entrepreneurship.

Admission requires being over 14, having passed ninth grade, and copies of an ID and school certificate. An adviser explains the syllabus, schedules, costs and uniform on enrollment, and the payment options include cash, bank transfer, bank deposit, direct credit with the institute or credit through financial partners. Enrollment is formalized on the Q10 platform, where students find their materials. The accounting syllabus ends with a business placement, and the home page says the institute has agreements with companies for the placements of its technical programs. It reports 2,000 technical program interns and 201 companies that have taken them on.

Companies and partners

Polisura also trains staff for employers. The home page offers companies a 10% discount agreement for training employees or their families, and reports 4,751 employees certified and 483 companies that have chosen it to train their staff. For learners who want still more free certified courses, the FAQ points to Politécnico Intercontinental, which it calls "nuestro aliado educativo" (our educational ally). Support runs through soporte@polisura.edu.co, phone and WhatsApp.

Who it suits and who it does not

The free diplomas suit Spanish-speaking adults who want to learn a specific skill in three weeks without paying up front, and who decide afterward whether a certificate for 80,000 pesos or 25 dollars is worth it: a nurse adding basic life support, an office worker learning Excel or document management, or someone trying Python before committing to more. The technical programs suit people in and around Medellín and Itagüí, or online learners who can attend evening sessions, who want a year-long vocational qualification with a work placement.

The limits are the flip side. The diplomas are short courses with a certificate of completion from the institute, while the occupational aptitude certificate belongs to the year-long technical programs, which have their own fees quoted by an adviser. The site and its course catalog are in Spanish, and course pages give three weeks as the length while the programming FAQ speaks of about 120 hours, so learners should check the plan for the diploma they choose.
