What +IFMG is

+IFMG is the free online course platform of the Instituto Federal de Minas Gerais (IFMG), a federal education institute in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. It is a product for learners. The site's title sums up the offer, "Cursos online EaD gratuitos" (free online distance learning courses), and the banner adds "Cursos gratuitos e com certificação online!" (free courses with online certification). Its slogan is "O +IFMG significa um IFMG cada vez mais perto de você!" (+IFMG means an IFMG that is ever closer to you).

Anyone can register for an account and enroll. The platform runs in Portuguese and is published by IFMG through a program the site calls Programa +IFMG, with links to the institute's Pró-reitoria de Extensão (Proex), its outreach office.

Size

The home page's "Nossos Números" (our numbers) panel gives four counters: 80000+ enrolled students (alunos inscritos), 140+ courses available, 65000+ positive ratings (avaliações positivas), and 12 categories. The course catalog page itself lists 18 course categories, so the two counts differ. These are the institute's own running totals.

The catalog

The catalog page describes each of its 18 categories and gives the number of courses in each:

  • Comunicação (Communication), 4 courses: corporate, academic and media communication, from public speaking to analyzing and producing media.
  • Cultura (Culture), 3 courses: civic education and critical thinking through historical, scientific and social development, covering memory, heritage, diversity and the evolution of science and institutions.

  • Idiomas (Languages), 18 courses: speaking, listening, reading and writing in French, Spanish and English, plus Portuguese for specific purposes, Portuguese grammar, and Portuguese for immigrants.
  • Mais Ciência na Escola (More Science in School), 8 courses: science education in basic schooling, preparing teachers to supervise research projects.

  • STEAM, 5 courses: science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics with a strong maker culture focus and innovation projects.
  • Tecnologia e Produção (Technology and Production), 16 courses: digital productivity tools for office work, engineering and industrial automation.
  • Trabalho (Work), 11 courses: immediate job training and workplace awareness.

The spread is the platform's strength. The largest areas are IT, languages, technology and production, education, and exam preparation, which covers the needs of job seekers, teachers and school leavers in one place.

The most accessed courses

The home page highlights the three courses learners open most: "Educação Inclusiva: Introdução ao Transtorno do Espectro Autista (TEA)" (Inclusive Education, an introduction to autism spectrum disorder), "Tecnologias na Educação: Docência e Tutoria EaD" (Technologies in Education, teaching and tutoring in distance learning) and "Redação para o ENEM" (essay writing for the ENEM national exam). Two of the three serve teachers working on inclusive and online classrooms, and the third serves students preparing for the ENEM.

Certificates

Certification is part of the core promise, "com certificação online". The menu has a section for validating certificates (Validar certificados) with an online validator (Validador online) for checking a +IFMG certificate. That matters for the uses the testimonials mention, from improving a CV to counting a course toward complementary activities at university.

Using the platform

Learners create an account (Registrar or Inscreva-se) and log in to a "Meus cursos" (my courses) area that lists their enrollments. Courses can be found by category or through a course search. The site offers text size and contrast controls, a support link (Suporte) to contact the team, a web radio station (Rádio +IFMG), and a Centro de Memórias. A notice on every page asks registered students to confirm or update their per capita family income in their profile on the virtual learning environment, which the notice says is a compliance requirement of PNP/MEC.

What learners say

The home page carries testimonials from former students in states across Brazil. Lucas Rabelo, from Mato Grosso do Sul, planned to take one course to count as complementary activities at university, "mas achei tão bom que farei mais!" (but I found it so good I will take more). José Henrique, from Rio Grande do Norte, had recently lost his job and says "A plataforma está me ajudando muito!" (the platform is helping me a lot). Roberto de Almeida, from Tocantins, admits he had always been prejudiced against distance learning, but "esses cursos aqui me fizeram mudar de ideia" (these courses changed my mind). Milena Rodrigues, from São Paulo, notes that there are more advanced courses and that she started with introductory ones to work her way up.

Who it suits

+IFMG suits Portuguese-speaking learners who want free courses with an online certificate from a federal institute. Job seekers can build practical skills in IT, office and industrial tools, management or languages. Teachers and teaching students will find the largest choice of professional development, from inclusive education and distance teaching to science education and research methods. School students can prepare for the ENEM and IFMG entrance exams, and immigrants can study Portuguese.

It suits fewer people who do not read Portuguese, since the site and courses are in Portuguese. Some categories are small, with three or four courses in Culture, Environment, Health, Communication and distance learning training, so a learner looking for depth in one of those subjects will find a short list rather than a full program.
