What It Is
France Université Numérique (FUN) is the shared online learning platform of French public higher education. It is run by a public interest group, the Groupement d'Intérêt Public France Université Numérique, whose members are universities and other public teaching and research bodies. For learners, FUN is a MOOC catalog: courses produced by French higher education institutions, many free, some paid, with certificates of achievement on many of them. For universities and schools, FUN is also an all-in-one digital learning service, sold as FUN Premium and a lighter standard offer, covering course hosting, virtual classrooms, professional training sales, learning data and production support. The site describes FUN as "un opérateur public soutenu par l’État" (a public operator supported by the state), and the site is in French.
What Learners Get
The courses on FUN come from its member and partner institutions, and the standard offer page explains the two kinds of course they can publish: "hébergement de cours, ouverts ou restreints, proposés gratuitement par les membres ou les partenaires aux apprenants" (hosting of open or restricted courses offered free to learners by members or partners) and "hébergement de formations vendues par les membres ou les partenaires aux apprenants, avec utilisation du tunnel d’achat développé spécifiquement par FUN" (hosting of training sold to learners by members or partners, using a checkout built specifically by FUN). So a learner finds both free MOOCs and paid professional courses in one place, and pays for the latter through FUN's own checkout.
Certificates have a long history on the platform. A news item states that "Depuis 2016, FUN délivre des certificats de réussite sur certains MOOC" (since 2016, FUN has issued certificates of achievement on some MOOCs), and that in September 2026 the certificates move to a new design, "plus lisible, plus valorisant" (easier to read and more rewarding to show). The standard offer also lists badges, certificates or micro-certifications on different types of courses, and technical support for learners.
Paid professional training on FUN Premium comes with the paperwork that French professional training requires. The Premium page lists online payment, a training contract, tutoring, attendance tracking, a "certificat de réalisation" (certificate of completion), and the issuing of micro-certifications or diplomas. For open courses, FUN Premium also offers remote exam proctoring ("Surveillance d’examens à distance"). From 2026, Premium institutions get ready-made training paths preparing students for the Pix and écri+ certifications.
Virtual Classrooms
FUN runs a virtual classroom service for higher education, Classe virtuelle pour l'Enseignement Supérieur. The standard offer describes direct access to virtual classes on Big Blue Button (BBB), "financées par la DGESIP et opérées par FUN" (funded by the DGESIP and operated by FUN). The Premium page calls it the sovereign BBB platform of French higher education and research, and adds recording and storage of classes, document sharing, automatic transcription of videos for subtitles, summaries, meeting minutes and quiz generation.
FUN Premium for Institutions
FUN Premium is presented as "La solution numérique tout-en-un pour l’enseignement supérieur public" (the all-in-one digital solution for public higher education) and is "actuellement réservé aux Établissements Publics" (currently reserved for public institutions). Its service list covers:
- open courses: unlimited course publishing on the FUN platform, remote exam proctoring, badges and certificates;
- initial training: Pix and écri+ preparation paths;
- professional training: unlimited access to the platform for selling professional courses, with the payment and contract tools above;
- virtual classes on BBB with the extra services above;
- audiovisual production, from studio filming to post-production;
- hybrid course design: review of existing courses, advice, an action plan and instructional design;
- custom training;
- learning data: a Learning Record Store and teaching dashboards.
The page gives eleven reasons to join. Among them: visibility for an institution's courses "auprès de millions d’apprenantes et d’apprenants" (to millions of learners) through the FUN catalog, social media, newsletters and webinars; a single membership fee for the whole bundle, "sans surcoût et sans quota" (no extra cost and no quota); revenue from selling professional training through an integrated checkout with automated contracts; and teaching dashboards that let staff "suivre les parcours, de repérer les signaux faibles, d’analyser les dynamiques d’apprentissage" (follow learner paths, spot weak signals and analyze learning dynamics). FUN also states that its platforms run on public, sovereign and interoperable infrastructure "en conformité avec le RGPD" (in compliance with the GDPR). Teaching staff get editorial support, technical support, production resources and instructional design help, and institutions join a network of universities, schools, shared services, UNTs and INSPEs that share and reuse content.
The Standard Offer and Pricing
Institutions that only want to publish a few free courses can use the standard offer, which is open to bodies of any legal status, from public universities and research bodies to associations and foundations. FUN serves two kinds of client: members, public bodies with a teaching or research activity that have joined the GIP, and partners, private or public bodies that have signed a partnership agreement. The page states that the services are the same for both, "en revanche une différence de tarification est appliquée" (but different pricing applies). The standard offer adds an audiovisual team and promotion of services. The site prints no prices for either offer; institutions request them through a contact form.
Community and Projects
FUN is active in the French higher education community. It co-organizes Les Quartiers du Numérique with L'Université Numérique, a free day of talks on the future of teaching held at the Cnam in Paris on 14 October 2026. It appears at Moodle Moot 2026, the French-speaking Moodle community event, to discuss shared platforms and new online formats. It shared its work on accessibility through the EIFFELa project in issue 41 of Amue's La collection numérique, asking how to move from a compliance requirement to accessibility that is genuinely useful to learners. NumériSup, building on an experiment started in 2022 with CY Cergy Paris, brings public higher education together around digital skills, certification and distance learning.
Who It Suits
FUN suits French-speaking learners who want free or paid courses from French universities with a certificate at the end, and professionals who want university-backed professional training in French. It suits French public universities, schools and other public institutions that want one shared platform for MOOCs, virtual classes, professional training sales and learning analytics without building their own, and other organizations that want to publish free courses through the standard offer. It is built around the French public sector, so FUN Premium itself is closed to private institutions, and anyone outside France should check that course content is available in a language they read.
