What It Is

Federica Web Learning is the MOOC platform of the University of Naples Federico II in Italy. Its home page describes Federica as "il Centro di Ateneo per l’innovazione, la progettazione e la diffusione della formazione digitale dell’Università di Napoli Federico II che da oltre 20 anni produce e diffonde formazione digitale" (the university's center for the innovation, design and spread of digital learning, which has produced and shared digital education for more than 20 years). For learners it is a large catalog of free online courses, mostly in Italian with a substantial set in English and other languages, ending in a certificate of participation. Alongside the courses, Federica works with public bodies and partner universities as a course production and platform partner. The site runs in Italian with an English option, and the footer gives the center's address in Naples.

The Free Catalog

The catalog page puts the core offer plainly: "Esplora il nostro catalogo MOOC e scegli tra oltre 700 corsi online ad accesso libero quelli più adatti a te" (explore our MOOC catalog and choose from more than 700 open-access online courses), followed by "Completa il corso e acquisisci un attestato di partecipazione" (complete the course and earn a certificate of participation). The home page calls them "corsi online gratuiti," free online courses.

Courses can be filtered by area (University, Orientation, Federica Pro), by topic and by status (now open, coming soon, to be announced). The fifteen topics run from environment and energy, art and design, business and economics, and chemistry and biology to computer science, data science and statistics, law, education and teaching, engineering, languages, mathematics and physics, health and medicine, social sciences, the humanities and personal development. Titles show the range: Computer Vision, Machine Learning for Economists, Time Series Econometrics, Robotics & Robots, Introduction to Computed Tomography, Digital Pathology, Precalculus, Fisica I, Storia d'Italia contemporanea, Criminologia, Green Economy & ESG Management, and a course on the EU AI Act and Digital Services Act. A set of research-skills courses covers writing a European research proposal and scientific publishing.

Courses come from several Italian universities, not only Federico II. The partner list names Firenze, Milano Bicocca, Napoli L'Orientale, Padova, Pavia, Stranieri Siena and CISIA, with Calabria and Catania marked as coming soon. Each course card names its instructors, and a course is labeled as a single course or a multi-course program.

Languages

Language learning is one of the platform's biggest areas. The home page invites learners to "Impara e migliora una lingua" (learn and improve a language) and reports: "Sono già oltre 260 mila gli iscritti ai corsi di lingua su Coursera e Federica Web Learning" (more than 260 thousand learners have already enrolled in its language courses on Coursera and Federica Web Learning).

The English track is graded by level, with separate courses for Pre-Beginner, Beginner A1, Elementary A2, Lower Intermediate B1.1, Intermediate B1.2, Upper Intermediate B2.1, Pre-advanced B2.2 and Advanced C1, plus English for the Workplace B1, English for Financial Literacy at B1+ and B2, Business English, and two courses for high school English teachers. French and Spanish each run from Beginner A1 through Elementary A2 and Intermediate B1 to Upper Intermediate B2. Some English courses, such as English for Business B1, are also offered on Coursera.

Italian is covered in depth too. A long Italian Language series by D. Bartalesi-Graf, taught in English, moves through themes such as cities and the piazza, Italian cuisine, art, the health system, politics, the environment, and Dante's journey in the Divine Comedy, grouped into beginner, intermediate and advanced programs, with versions for Ukrainian speakers. There are also courses on academic Italian, a B1 course on living and studying in Italy from La Sapienza, and introductions to Swahili, biblical Hebrew and pluricentric German.

Federica Pro, AI and Teacher Training

Federica Pro is the professional development line. Featured courses include "Digital marketing: strategie essenziali per PMI e PA," which teaches learners to manage websites, social media and email marketing, analyze results and use AI as operational support; "Teambuilding e la nuova leadership," on team building, leadership styles and motivating people; "Crescere con l'AI," on using generative AI effectively and safely in one's own workflows; and "Pa nell'era dell'AI," on applying generative AI to administrative work in the public sector.

An AI section collects courses such as Giornalismo nell'era dell'AI, Introduzione al Design Thinking, several Intelligenza Artificiale and Machine Learning courses, and Giochi di Statistica con R. A continuing education section for teachers covers teaching with AI, mixed reality for learning, mobile learning, coding at school with free software, educational psychology, and How to Mooc, a course on designing and running an online course. The University and Orientation areas serve current and prospective university students.

Degrees and the ALMA Network

Federica also hosts degree programs. The home page promotes a fully online Master in Economics & Finance from Federico II, with the line "Study flexibly, wherever you are," and the catalog lists a three-year bachelor's degree, Scienze del Turismo, from UNINA.

ALMA, the Advanced Learning Multimedia Alliance, is a national project for digital teaching innovation under Italy's PNRR. The home page says: "Con ALMA, Federica coordina un hub di 13 università e un AFAM per diffondere formazione pubblica, gratuita e di qualità attraverso l'innovazione didattica" (through ALMA, Federica coordinates a hub of 13 universities and an arts and music institution to spread free, quality public education through teaching innovation). Federica also runs research and cooperation projects such as Mediterranean Futures, SHARE AFRICA and M.I.C.S.

For Institutions

For partner organizations, Federica lists a service package: designing custom courses from a needs analysis, management and monitoring with project managers and instructional designers, communication and help desk support, dedicated program management, personalization with Single Sign On access to the MOOC catalog, and learning analytics on how users behave in courses. The footer states a UNI EN ISO 9001:2015 quality management system and a .eu Web Awards 2021 recognition, and notes co-financing from the European Union, the Italian state and the Campania region.

Who It Suits

Federica suits Italian speakers who want free university courses with a certificate of participation, and learners anywhere who want a structured, level-by-level English, French, Spanish or Italian course at no cost. Teachers and public sector staff get dedicated tracks on AI and digital teaching, and university students can use it alongside their studies or to explore programs. Institutions looking for a course production and MOOC partner can use its services and SSO-based catalog access. The catalog is mostly in Italian, so non-Italian speakers should filter for English-language courses, and the site prints no prices for Federica Pro courses or the online master's.
