What it is

Speak is an AI-powered language learning app for learners who want to talk, not just study. Its FAQ calls it "an AI-powered language learning app built to get you speaking a new language", and the home page sums up the pitch as "An expert-crafted curriculum, personalized by AI." The app is built by language education experts and, according to the FAQ, has "a formal partnership with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, and is backed by the OpenAI Startup Fund". That partnership, the FAQ says, supports Speak's conversational AI practice, real-time feedback and personalized lesson generation.

The company states that Speak has been downloaded more than 15 million times worldwide and holds a 4.8-star rating across the App Store and Google Play. The footer names the company as Speakeasy Labs, Inc.

Languages

English speakers can learn Spanish, French, Korean, Japanese, Italian and Simplified Chinese (Mandarin). Speak is also an English app: the FAQ says learners "across South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Europe, Latin America, and beyond use Speak to practice spoken English" with the same AI conversation and feedback experience. Each language follows the same method, "adapted for the specific pronunciation and conversation patterns of that language."

The site itself runs in Korean, Japanese, Spanish, traditional Chinese (including a Hong Kong version), simplified Chinese, Portuguese, French, German and English, and the FAQ lists separate local sites for South Korea, Japan, Spanish-speaking markets, Taiwan, Hong Kong, mainland China, Brazil, France and Germany. Learners who want another language can join a waitlist, which the company says helps guide its language roadmap.

The Speak Method

Every lesson follows what Speak calls the Speak Method, "a proprietary three-step framework":

  1. Learn. Each lesson teaches "the phrases and patterns that native speakers actually use in real situations", not textbook sentences or grammar drills, but "language that works the moment you need it."
  2. Practice. You repeat those patterns across different situations, "again and again, until they become automatic rather than memorized."
  3. Apply. You use what you learned "in a real back-and-forth conversation with the Speak Tutor AI", which gives feedback on what actually matters and lets you go again as many times as you need.

The FAQ says this loop "is designed to close the gap between knowing a language and being able to speak it under pressure." The home page shows sample lessons on saying you feel tired, asking whether someone wants to go somewhere, and making reservations.

Feedback and personalization

Pronunciation feedback is central. When you speak during a lesson, "the app listens and gives you immediate feedback on how you sound", covering not only whether the answer was right but how natural the phrasing is, and you can repeat phrases until they feel right. One user review on the home page praises exactly this: Speak "provides detailed feedback on 'why' the expression is awkward."

Personalization builds over time. After each lesson, the FAQ says, Speak "uses your mistakes and learning history to generate personalized review and custom practice." Streaks, leagues, reminders, progress tracking and Made for You lessons are part of the app. The FAQ also explains how this differs from talking to a general AI chatbot: there, "you decide what to practice and how", while Speak gives "an expert-built curriculum, level-based lessons, and a clear progression."

The app is meant for every level, "including complete beginners." The FAQ points out that because you speak with an AI rather than a person, "there's no embarrassment about mistakes and no pressure to answer perfectly", and that Speak also suits people who "freeze when it's time to actually speak" after studying a language before. You can "start your first lesson within minutes of signing up."

Plans and pricing

Speak starts with a 7-day free trial in which you can try the core features, "including AI conversation practice, speaking-focused lessons, and real-time feedback." After that a paid subscription is required, in one of two plans:

  • Speak Premium gives access to the full lesson library and AI conversation practice, real-time feedback on pronunciation and phrasing, and streaks, progress tracking and learning reminders.
  • Speak Premium Plus adds Made for You lessons ("custom lessons generated from your specific mistakes and learning gaps"), Speak Tutor as "a personalized lesson creator where you set the topic, situation, or goal and Speak builds a lesson around it", and unlimited personalized review focused on your weak spots. Premium Plus users also get review targeting "the specific pronunciation patterns they struggle with most."

The site publishes no fixed prices. "Pricing varies by plan, region, and any current promotions, so the most accurate pricing is always within the app", and each local site shows market pricing.

Cancelling is straightforward: "Speak has no lock-in." App Store subscribers cancel in their Apple ID subscription settings, Google Play subscribers in their Google Play subscriptions, and web subscribers manage membership inside the Speak app. You can cancel during the trial if Speak is not right for you. The Speak Help Center covers pricing, cancellations, refunds, account settings and troubleshooting in detail, and the footer offers a Gift Speak option.

To get started, you create an account on speak.com, start the trial, then download the iOS or Android app and log in with the same account, or sign up directly inside the app.

Speak for Business

Speak for Business is a plan for companies and organizations "that want to build practical language skills across their teams." Employees get AI-powered speaking practice and business-focused conversation courses, plus role plays and pronunciation practice built around real workplace situations. An admin portal lets the company add learners, customize content and track engagement and progress. The FAQ says it is designed for L&D, HR and training teams whose staff need to communicate in "meetings, presentations, client conversations, or cross-border collaboration", without coordinating live tutoring sessions.

What users say

The reviews on the home page are enthusiastic. Bob White calls it "Easily the most effective Spanish app I've used" and writes that it "makes sure you're actually picking up the concepts." Eugene Haight, who "figured I was too old to learn now", says that "in just 2 days I've picked up several sentences" of French. Jessica Park writes that "every lesson is made just for me." Patrick King likes the AI conversation: "it feels more confident and correct than talking to a real person!"

Who it suits

Speak suits learners whose main goal is to hold a conversation: beginners who want to speak from the first lesson, people who studied a language at school but freeze when they need to talk, and English learners abroad who want speaking practice without the nerves of a live partner. Premium Plus fits learners who want the app to build lessons around their own mistakes and chosen topics. Companies that need staff to speak more confidently in meetings and with clients can use Speak for Business and track progress from the admin portal.

The caveat is the narrow focus by design: Speak is built for spoken fluency, so learners whose priority is reading or writing will want to pair it with other study.
