What it is

Promova is a language learning app for learners, built around speaking early. Its home page opens with "Speak before you're ready" and explains the idea: "Speaking isn't the final step of learning a language" but where you start. The product combines self-study courses in the app, AI speaking practice, and classes with human tutors, both one-on-one and in groups. You can learn "anywhere on the web or app", and the app is offered through the App Store, Google Play and AppGallery.

The home page puts its numbers up front: a 4.6 app rating, 12 languages, "400+" topics and "46M" lessons taken. It also states that "93% of our learners say they feel more confident speaking". The name, its FAQ explains, is a Ukrainian word meaning "speech" or "pronunciation", and it also breaks into two words meaning "about language". The site itself can be read in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Ukrainian and Greek.

Languages and courses

The language picker lists English, Spanish, Spanish LATAM, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Portuguese, Arabic and Ukrainian, so Latin American Spanish is a course of its own next to standard Spanish. The site's course links also include American Sign Language. Free level tests are offered for English, Spanish, French, German and Italian, and the FAQ says there are courses "for all levels, from beginners to advanced learners".

Beyond general courses, Promova offers what it calls "Special language courses", which it says are designed "from business English to travel essentials", with topic-based vocabulary, cultural insights and practical phrases. The course menus show how far that goes for English in particular: Business English, Medical English, English for travel, work, IT, marketing, engineers, finance and negotiating, public speaking classes, accent reduction lessons, an English phonetics course, an intensive English course, English for living abroad, English with movies, a slang course, small talk and English for job interviews. There are also less conventional offerings such as a "Brainrot course" and "Neurodiversity in the Workplace". For younger English learners the resources menu lists kindergarten worksheets, Grade 1 worksheets and English learning games, next to exercises and quizzes in English and Spanish.

How the app works

The home page describes four steps.

Personal learning plan. "Most people don't know where to start with learning a language," the page says, so Promova builds a daily plan from your goals, your level and the time you actually have. The FAQ adds a quick level check, a choice of general or special courses, and smart reviews along the way.

AI tutor. After every session you get "an honest feedback", as the page puts it: what went well, what needs more practice, and what to do next.

Role-play with AI. You rehearse hard conversations before they happen: "A doctor's visit, a job interview, a first date". Another Promova page lists ordering food, checking in at the airport, arranging meetings and visiting a doctor among the situations it prepares you for, with instant feedback "all without needing a tutor".

Shadowing. Modeled on how children copy sounds, rhythm and timing, shadowing has you "listen to real people and repeat what they say".

Promova calls its approach "Human-made, AI-powered": every course, it says, "is built by linguists from scratch", while AI provides unlimited practice and feedback on what to improve. It also promises "Everything in one place", meaning grammar, vocabulary, listening, reading, writing and speaking inside the course rather than spread across a grammar blog, a podcast and a separate flashcard app. Lessons also include vocabulary quizzes and grammar exercises. Progress tracking comes through daily goals, streaks and a dashboard, and the home page shows a "5 days streak" achievement badge.

Getting started takes three steps on the home page: download the app, tell Promova about your goals, level and the topics you care about so it can build the plan, then "Speak in your very first lesson."

Oleksandr Usyk is part of the product. Under the heading "Backed by a champion who doesn't lose", the home page says Usyk "helped build the part of Promova that makes sure you don't just start, but keep going", listing a USYK MODE, a DISCIPLINE COURSE and Usyk as an AI tutor. The menus also mention a Promova CarPlay Tutor and AI tutors for English and Spanish.

Tutors, group classes and the Conversation Club

Promova is also a route to live teaching. A second Promova page lists "Individual classes with tutors" and "Group classes" among its features, invites you to find a tutor, and says "Your first private lesson is just a click away!" For practice without paying, the "Free English Conversation Club" lets learners "practice speaking with expert tutors and fellow students in an engaging environment", according to its FAQ. The same page describes a Promova community for sharing experiences and asking advice, with "Connection with tutors and learners worldwide" and a "Safe space for mistakes".

Free tools

The site offers free tools that do not need the app: a pronunciation checker ("Listen to any word, see its transcription, and learn how to use it"), a synonym finder, a past tense identifier that gives every past form of a verb with examples, a part of speech identifier, and an antonym finder. The blog, which the FAQ says holds "hundreds of helpful articles", covers vocabulary, grammar, culture, slang and idioms.

Price

Getting started is free: step one is "Download Promova app. It's free and takes less than a minute." The FAQ says "Some of our online language courses are free and many core features are (and always will be!) free", and recommends Promova Premium "to speed up your progress greatly". The site publishes no Premium price. On how long fluency takes, the FAQ is candid: on average 500 hours of dedicated practice for a language that shares the same roots as yours, and 1000+ hours for one that does not, though it adds that "Some people can shave this time in half with dedication, language classes, and regular practice."

Recognition and reviews

The awards section lists "TOP 10 on AppStore" (featured in Popular Apps to Try), "Silver and People's Choice Lovie Awards" for "Best Visual Design in Apps, Platforms & Software", a shortlisting at "AllStars by GP BullHound" for Entrepreneur of the Year and Tech, and "The 2024 EdTechX" awards in the language learning category.

Reviews quoted on the site praise the speaking features. Cheryl.m.Stevens writes on the App Store that her favorite part is "the role-playing exercises where I get to use my own thought process to build sentences and it gives real feedback on my usage of words and grammar." Wasihun on Google Play names "practice speaking, shadowing, vocabulary and listening" as the biggest advantages. One App Store reviewer, triders, mentions accessibility touches: "I like that it has dyslexic font and white noise for background to help me focus." Asili Kyungu on Google Play likes the questions at the end of lessons and writes that "Ten minutes are enough to get new vocabularies", while Adil Thabit says "I feel the app is diagnosing my weaknesses and helps me overcome them."

The footers name Promova Limited, with a Las Vegas, Nevada address on one page, and Unlimited Promova Limited in Limassol, Cyprus, on the home page. The site also runs an ambassador program, an affiliate program, Promova for Good, an educational board and an editorial process page.

Who it suits

Promova suits learners who want to talk early and want practice that fits short sessions. Its feature page says the app works "Whether you have five minutes or an hour". The mix of AI role-play, shadowing and the free Conversation Club gives English learners in particular a lot of low-pressure speaking practice, and the specialized English courses cover work needs from medicine to negotiating. Learners who want a human teacher can add private or group classes inside the same product.

The caveat is that the specialized courses on the menus are almost all for English, so learners of the other languages get a general course without the long list of work and travel options English has.
