What Linguascope is

Linguascope is an online language learning platform built for schools, with "interactive resources and materials for students and teachers of various languages." Its main customer is the school language department: a school buys one subscription, teachers use the material in class, and students log in with the school's details. The home page says the platform "was created by language educators who know what teachers need and how to keep students engaged," that it has been "Trusted Globally since 1998," and that "Thousands of primary and secondary schools rely on us daily to enrich their language curriculum." Individual learners, parents and private tutors can also subscribe to its apps.

The pitch on price is simplicity. Under the heading "16 Languages, One Price," the home page says a subscription gives access to 16 languages, "all levels included as standard," with "no confusing pricing tiers."

What a school subscription includes

A school subscription opens everything at once. The FAQ explains why the company does not sell languages or levels separately: offering all resources in a single package cuts administration, so "you're not paying for all languages/levels, but rather getting all languages/levels for the price of one." The home page describes the material as a "treasure trove of multimedia resources," from interactive activities to video and audio content.

Subscribing schools also get the tablet apps for free. According to the apps page, "When your school subscribes to Linguascope, our apps are FREE for you to download on your iPad, Android tablet or Microsoft device," using the school's usual username and password. Extra classroom material is part of the school package too: printable worksheets, on-demand video and audio files and ebooks are "reserved for school subscription accounts in line with our licensing agreements."

Beyond the platform, Linguascope runs a shop of supplementary products, including reproducible resources, storybooks, e-posters, songs, activity cards, French readers and video resources. A subscribing school can claim a 50% discount on all of them through the Teacher Portal.

The apps, by age and level

The apps page sets out a ladder of activities "across 16 languages," most of them aimed at a clear age band, which is what makes Linguascope a children's and teenagers' product as much as a language one.

  • An introductory app with an intergalactic theme, where friendly aliens guide students from planet to planet learning basic vocabulary, aimed at ages 6 to 12 (A1).
  • A beginner app covering "over 50 essentials topics," each unit opening with a presentation of core vocabulary and followed by practice activities, aimed at ages 9 to 14 (A2).
  • An intermediate app with 30 units, each built around a presentation role play, described as "Ideal for exam preparation" and aimed at ages 13 to 16 (B1).
  • A quiz with "hundreds of questions on language, culture, geography and more," suitable for all ages and levels.

For French there is a deeper set. Labo Grammaire (Beginner) has 45 units of grammar games, each with a mini grammar lesson, plus teacher notes and 45 PDF worksheets; Labo Grammaire (Intermediate) has 51 units and 51 worksheets and runs up to the passive voice. Vrai de vrai offers 36 authentic texts of 120 to 160 words, recorded for listening, with 72 printable files. C'est parti ! is a set of short activities to start lessons, in a beginner volume for students in their first to third year of French and an intermediate one for their third to fifth year. A narrated French story follows a dragon called Tonnerre and is aimed at ages 9 to 12.

LinguaLeague teaches twenty foundational vocabulary topics in French, German, Italian, Spanish and English through football. Verb wheels in the same five languages give the conjugation of 60 frequently used irregular verbs (120 in English), with charts on auxiliary verbs, composite verb forms and personal pronouns.

Whole-class games and Educandy

Linguascope Live turns a class into a quiz. The teacher sets up a game room on the Linguascope website, students "tap in the room code," and the app gives them an answer-button panel to play along in any of three activities. It needs an internet connection. A separate free app plays activities built on Educandy.com, Linguascope's activity creator site: a teacher shares a short code and students play.

Webinars for teachers

The company runs "weekly webinars to Modern Languages teachers around the world." The Linguascope Webinars app holds every recorded session on demand, and teachers can register to watch live ones. Teachers at subscribing schools log in with their teacher details; others can subscribe monthly or annually inside the app.

Individuals and private tutors

Students whose school has no license, parents and private tutors can subscribe as individuals. The apps page lists what that means: "Pick and choose the apps, languages and levels you need" with "Flexible monthly or annual subscription plans," managed through an Individual Portal that also gives access to the web apps. Signing up starts with a free Linguascope individual account, from which learners can "try out or subscribe to the apps of your choice." LinguaLeague sells in-app subscriptions of one, six or twelve months per language.

There are two limits. Individual plans allow "up to two connections at the same time," so they work for one-to-one lessons but not for groups, where each student needs a subscription. And individual subscriptions cover the interactive activities only, not the worksheets, video and audio files and ebooks that schools get.

Subscribing, licenses and price

The FAQ says a school's account is "usually activated within 24 hours" of receiving the completed subscription form, with a confirmation e-mail and a copy by post. A license is site-specific: each school using the resources needs its own, a school with several campuses needs one per campus, and groups buying for more than one school can ask about bulk discounts.

The site publishes no prices; the subscribe page asks schools, individuals and private tutors to call +44 20 7033 0202 for pricing details. The FAQ argues that "for the average school, the cost is just a few pence per student," and points schools that cannot stretch to the full cost to a list of funding suggestions at linguascope.com/funding.

On the technical side, the website runs on PC and Mac in an up-to-date browser, with iPad and Android tablets served through the subscriber apps. Activities use HTML5 canvas, so JavaScript has to be enabled.

What teachers say

The home page carries a long list of endorsements. Cristina Boira-Talena writes: "The resources are excellent and they save me hours of preparation time. A real find and a godsend!" Ann Smith says: "I have found this website absolutely invaluable. I would describe it as the cornerstone of my teaching." Jacqueline Guile reports that "some of my year 9 students have tried the activities and returned at lunchtime to have another go." PC Pro Magazine calls the resources "inspiring, accessible, student-friendly and curriculum-relevant," and Teach Primary Magazine writes: "If Linguascope is new to you, then you'll feel like all your Christmases have come at once."

Who it suits

Linguascope suits primary and secondary school language departments that want one subscription to cover every language and level they teach, with ready-made activities, printable worksheets and whole-class games that cut preparation time. Departments teaching French get the most, given the grammar, reading and starter apps built for it. Tutors running one-to-one lessons and families supporting a child at home can use the individual app plans, choosing just the languages and levels they need.

The caveats are about format and scope. Linguascope is a teacher's resource bank, not a live course, so students get activities and games rather than lessons with a tutor. Individual subscribers miss the printable and video material schools receive, and every price is quoted by phone rather than published.
