What Lingu is

Lingu is an online English school for learners who want a structured course with teachers behind it rather than an app on its own. The home page describes it as "an accredited language school founded in 2008 and headquartered in Stavanger, Norway," offering "flexible English courses online and in person, combining structured self-study, video lessons, live teacher-led practice, and practical activities for all levels." The site does not name the accrediting body. The company behind the site is Lingu Ltd, registered in England and Wales (no. 09197891) with an address at 29a Crown Street, Brentwood, Essex, and the footer says it is "Part of the Lingu group."

Everything starts from one subscription, Easy English, and the other plans are add-ons to it. According to the site, students can work on "grammar, speaking, pronunciation, business English, and exam preparation with support from experienced teachers and modern learning tools." The home page counts 728.9k+ learners and 800+ lessons, and shows a 4.5 rating on Trustpilot.

Easy English: what the subscription includes

Easy English is pitched as daily English practice with all course materials included, a structured A1 to C2 library, smart practice and personal writing feedback from a teacher. The site breaks it into six parts under the line "One subscription. Six ways to make English stick."

The first is an AI tutor for "instant feedback, day or night." A learner submits a piece of writing and gets sentence-level corrections in seconds, or speaks a phrase and sees which sounds need work.

The second is real teachers. Learners can ask a question and get a written reply from a qualified teacher, and speaking sessions with a teacher are available on demand for those who want them. They are optional, so a learner who prefers to study alone is not pushed into a call.

The third is long-form video: "Hundreds of cinematic lessons" in which native speakers act out real stories, with interactive subtitles and vocabulary practice built in.

The fourth is game-based practice, quick vocabulary and grammar games with streaks and chapters that open up as a learner advances, meant to bring learners back each day.

The fifth is pronunciation. A learner speaks into the microphone and the AI shows which sounds to adjust, phoneme by phoneme. The home page credits the pronunciation tool with being "98% accurate."

The sixth is access on every device. Progress, vocabulary lists and stories sync across phone, tablet and laptop, so a lesson started on the bus can be finished on the couch, and there are apps on Google Play and the App Store.

Levels and the placement test

Lingu organizes the course on the six CEFR levels and gives each one a plain goal. At A1 (Beginner) a learner can greet, order and introduce themselves. At A2 (Elementary) they talk about routines, plans and people. B1 (Intermediate) means holding conversations on familiar topics, B2 (Upper-intermediate) discussing ideas with nuance and confidence, C1 (Advanced) expressing yourself fluently for work and study, and C2 (Mastery) understanding virtually everything you read or hear.

A free placement test takes 5 minutes, and the site says Easy English opens every level, so a learner can "move up the moment you're ready." Moving up does not mean buying a new level, because the whole A1 to C2 library sits inside the one subscription.

Upgrades: live classes, a fast track and teams

"Every plan builds on Easy English," the site says. A learner can "Add live classes, a 12-week sprint, or bring your whole team."

English Live is the drop-in option. It adds unlimited live classes, held every day across mornings, evenings and weekends, and includes everything in Easy English. It is priced from $95 a month. One of the Trustpilot reviews on the home page, from Yulia Shor in the United Arab Emirates, describes what these sessions are like: "I enjoy the live classes with teachers and a group of students from all over the world."

English Fast-track is a fixed program for one level over 12 weeks. It includes 48 instructor-led sessions, 1:1 level assessments and access to a community, and costs $639 as a one-off payment. The site notes that "English Live includes everything in Easy English, and Fast Track includes everything in English Live," so the fast track is the fullest package.

Enterprise is for teams. It gives Easy English to a whole team, with progress reporting and admin tools, one invoice and custom cohorts. There is no published price; companies request a proposal.

Prices and terms

The entry point is Easy English from $29 a month. English Live starts from $95 a month, English Fast-track is $639 one-off, and Enterprise is quoted on request. The site repeats "Cancel anytime. No lock-in." next to the subscription, so a learner can stop Easy English or English Live without a long contract.

Exam preparation, companies and other services

Beyond general English, the footer lists IELTS preparation, TOEFL preparation and Cambridge English, alongside general English courses and the free placement test. For organizations there are pages for English for companies, English for NGOs and charities, and schools. The resources section adds one-to-one English lessons, live practice sessions, a podcast and a "How it works" guide. Customer service is listed at hello@lingu.com, and there is a Contact us page.

What students say

The home page shows a live feed of lesson ratings, with "4535 students rated lessons in the past week" and an average of 4.5 out of 5.0 on Lingu courses. The Trustpilot reviews quoted there come from several countries. Daniela Golemac in the United Kingdom writes: "When I moved to the UK, I struggled with confidence in speaking English. The clear lessons and supportive teachers really helped me improve and feel comfortable using English in daily life. I highly recommend it!" Carlos Mahecha in Colombia writes: "Many thanks to the team of teachers who accompany the training process. They love what they do and are very patient. I highly recommend their methodology." Yulia Shor adds that she "found a vast amount of courses ranging from beginner to advanced," and Anastasios Dimopoulos in Greece says "it really improves my English language skills."

Who it suits

Lingu suits learners of English who want the structure of a school without fixed class times. The Easy English subscription works for self-starters who like short daily practice, AI correction and the option to ask a teacher, and the A1 to C2 library means a learner does not outgrow it. Learners who want to speak regularly with a teacher and other students can add English Live, and anyone who needs to move up a level by a deadline can take the 12-week Fast-track with its 48 sessions and level assessments. The exam pages make it a candidate for IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge preparation, and the Enterprise plan gives employers reporting and one invoice.

There are limits to keep in mind. Lingu teaches English only, so it is not a choice for anyone learning another language. The live classes and the fast track are where the teaching time sits, and they cost well above the $29 entry price. The video lessons, games and AI feedback carry most of the work on the base plan, with teacher contact there limited to written replies and optional on-demand speaking sessions.
