What Lingopie is
Lingopie is a language learning platform for individual learners that teaches through real entertainment rather than a textbook course. Its home page puts the idea plainly: "Watch real shows. Click any word. Understand real conversations." It pitches the routine at 10 minutes a day. The FAQ describes it as "an immersive language learning platform that helps you learn Spanish and 14 other languages through real-world TV shows, movies, cartoons, podcasts, news, books, and audiobooks." The home page reports 2M+ learners worldwide and a 4.8 rating on Trustpilot, and the site gives 2019 as its founding year and names David Datny as CEO and Roy Oppenheim as co-founder.
Besides the self-study streaming service, Lingopie sells private 1-on-1 lessons with native-speaker teachers, runs live group lessons, and offers Lingopie for Schools and Lingopie for Libraries for institutions.
Watching and learning
The heart of the product is an interactive video player. Every show runs with dual subtitles (the original language plus English), and a learner can tap or hover on any word to see "the conversational meaning. No textbook definitions." Every clicked word is saved and comes back later as a flashcard or quiz question, so a binge session doubles as vocabulary collection. The subscription list on the language pages names the tools: dual subtitles, flashcards, quizzes and games, a real-time transcript player, an audio loop function, and a recorder for pronunciation and comprehension practice.
Speaking practice is built into the player. Learners can pause and record themselves, play lines on repeat, and slow playback down. When a phrase is hard, the Dutch page suggests clicking the "Say It" feature to hear the pronunciation again, and the home page FAQ describes "an AI-powered pronunciation coach to help you speak with confidence." A tool can also read a fast line back slowly, as the French page explains. Learners can adjust playback speed and subtitle settings and build personalized word lists, and progress tracking shows how many hours they have watched.
The content goes well beyond TV. The home page lists TV shows and movies, kids content, podcasts, short stories, audiobooks and news sources. The FAQ says a subscription gives "unlimited access to 5,000+ exclusive TV shows, podcasts, and books across 15 languages." Lingopie Short Stories are written for every level and let learners read along while native narration plays, with highlighted words, hover-over translations and click-to-save. The French page adds that there are "over a thousand hours" of French TV alone, and the catalog is grouped into collections such as Best of Colombia, Best of Japan and Best Cartoons.
Levels
Lingopie says it is built for every level, including total beginners, and the home page sets out what each stage gets. Beginners get simple entry-level stories, understandable news sources, friendly quizzes and live group lessons. Intermediate learners get TV shows and movies, video flashcards with grammar explanations, a pronunciation helper tool and private lessons. Advanced learners get popular TV, movies and podcasts, repetition tools, an AI-powered grammar index and private lessons. For a first step, the Dutch page suggests listening to Dutch music for the first few hours, then picking a show and watching just 15 minutes a day.
Languages and devices
The home page lists 15 languages: Spanish, French, German, English, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Russian, Dutch, Turkish, Hebrew, Polish and Greek. The FAQ says a yearly or lifetime plan gives "full access to all 15 languages on Lingopie", so learners can switch between them or study several at once.
Lingopie runs in a web browser, on iOS and Android, and on TV apps. The FAQ names Fire TV, Roku and Google TV, the Dutch page's device answer adds Samsung TV, Android TV and Apple TV, and learners can also mirror to a smart TV. The same answer mentions a Chrome extension for learning on Netflix and Disney+, and the French page describes an integration with Netflix for selected Mandarin Chinese shows.
Teachers, group lessons and community
For learners who want a person in the loop, the French page says "If you prefer learning with a teacher, we offer private 1-on-1 lessons you can book at any time through our platform," and that "All our Lingopie verified teachers are native speakers." The suggested use is to discuss favorite shows and review the words and expressions met while watching, which ties the tutoring directly to the viewing. The site lists Lingopie Lessons as a product of its own, next to Lingopie TV, Lingopie Schools and the Lingopie App.
Group practice runs through the community. The FAQ invites learners to join the language learning community on Discord to ask questions, share tips and take part in group lessons, and the language pages mention webinars.
Plans, trial and refunds
The pricing page offers "all languages and features to you for free for 7 days", with no charge during the trial and no obligation. The site names Monthly, Annual and Lifetime offers alongside the free trial, describes the annual subscription as "best value for recurring plans," and describes Lifetime as a one-time purchase for permanent access. A Family Plan adds up to 3 child profiles to one subscription. The site publishes no prices for these plans.
The pricing FAQ sets out the terms. Subscriptions renew automatically until canceled, and canceling stops billing from the next cycle while access continues to the end of the paid period. "Subscriptions for the current month are final", and a yearly subscription "is charged after your 7-day free trial is over and can't be refunded." Lingopie says "We accept all major credit cards and debit cards" and uses Stripe as its payment processor, so card data never passes through Lingopie's servers. The site also sells gift cards and runs an affiliate program and a creators and influencers program.
Schools and libraries
Lingopie for Schools is described as a platform where "Teachers can assign age-appropriate content, manage classes, and track progress." Each student gets a personal account that adapts to their level, all 15 languages are included, and the FAQ mentions "flexible, school-friendly licensing and payment options." The home page says Lingopie works with "100s of schools and libraries" and offers special discounts for educational and community spaces, with eligibility checked through the contact form.
What learners say
Short reviews on the home page are enthusiastic. Maria, PT: "Absolutly great. I am enjoying it a lot. Very good material." Adriana, CA: "The concept is really smart: the videos are authentic and captivating." Nadia, CA: "Helpful with building grammar!" Arielle, US: "Just started using this to improve my French, and it's wonderful! There are so many interesting shows." Support is available at support@lingopie.com, through a contact form and an FAQ.
Who it suits
Lingopie suits learners who already watch a lot of TV and would rather spend that time in their target language. Intermediate learners who find native-speed media hard to follow get the most from dual subtitles, clickable words and the loop and slow-down tools. Beginners have their own track of simple stories, quizzes and group lessons, and learners who want accountability can add native-speaker teachers without leaving the platform. Teachers and librarians get a classroom version with assignments and progress tracking.
The caveats are about structure and cost. Lingopie is a library with tools rather than a step-by-step course, so learners who need a set sequence of grammar lessons will be steering themselves. Anyone choosing a yearly plan should cancel within the 7-day trial if it is not a fit, since the yearly charge cannot be refunded.
