What Deutsch-Uni Online is
Deutsch-Uni Online (DUO) is an online German course platform for learners who want to study at a university in Germany, or who are already studying there and want to improve. It is a service of the Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung (g.a.s.t.), the Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development, a registered association, and it runs in cooperation with Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU). The German home page says the DUO learning materials are developed together with LMU, which it calls "eine der führenden Exzellenzuniversitäten Deutschlands" (one of Germany's leading universities of excellence). The same page notes that g.a.s.t. also offers the TestDaF, TestAS and onSET tests.
The home page sums up the offer in three numbers: 75,000 learners since 2008, 2,500 hours of exercise material and 60 qualified tutors. Courses run from level A1 to C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and the English "Learning with DUO" page says that "even the online courses for beginners are focused on topics from everyday student life at German universities."
What a learner studies
The home page lists the skills DUO sets out to build for university study: reading, listening, writing and speaking first, then giving presentations, writing term papers and bachelor's and master's theses, and reading and understanding academic texts. Preparation for the TestDaF sits alongside the general courses, and the English page adds that "you practice all language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing."
The catalog is split into four strands, each shown on the home page with the level badges A1 to C1:
- Alltag und Studium in Deutschland (everyday life and studying in Germany), the general course line, with courses such as Basis-Deutsch A1.1 and Uni-Deutsch B1.1.
- Fachsprache (subject language), described as "Wirtschaft, Technik, Kultur und mehr", that is business, technology, culture and more.
- Prüfungsvorbereitung TestDaF (TestDaF exam preparation).
- Berufssprache (professional language), covering "Bewerbung, Praktikum und Job": job applications, internships and work.
A self-assessment tool in the site's quick links helps a learner pick a starting level before booking. The English page says course content is developed "in close collaboration with specialists" and promises "targeted learning materials based on didactic methods."
Three learning formats
The English page says that "most DUO courses are available with or without tutoring" and sets out three formats.
Learning without a tutor. You work through the course on your own and get automatic corrections, but no personal feedback on writing and speaking exercises. The page calls this option "especially cost-effective", and because it does not depend on session dates, you can start at any time.
Learning with a tutor. On top of the automatic corrections, a tutor gives personal feedback on writing and speaking exercises, offers individual study tips, answers questions and moderates the course discussions. These courses have fixed start dates, but the page says you can still manage your time flexibly and schedule chat sessions with your tutor. You receive a certificate once you complete the course.
Intensive learning with a tutor. Everything in the tutored format, plus the option to submit additional tasks to receive "a certificate with ECTS points upon successful completion." The course names on the site show that the ECTS option reaches down to beginner level: one learner story comes from a course called "Basis-Deutsch A1.2 mit Tutor ECTS".
The learning platform
DUO is entirely online. The English page asks for an Internet-capable desktop or laptop with speakers and a microphone, a stable Internet connection and a quiet place to work, and it links to a system requirements page. All the materials a learner needs are on the DUO learning platform. You study "any time, any place", and the page adds that regularly completing units is a plus.
Learners are not on their own. The platform has a forum and chat area for exchanging ideas with other learners worldwide, and the site describes the DUO community as "5,000 students worldwide". The tutors, it says, "speak German at a native level, are experienced teachers and provide you with individual support." The page also stresses that you do not depend on a location or on course schedules, which matters for someone preparing from abroad.
TestDaF preparation
This is where the test-prep side of DUO sits. The organization behind the courses also offers the TestDaF, according to the home page, and the exam strand prepares for it. The home page lists TestDaF-Training B2/C1 among the next courses to start, and the learner stories on the English page name two more: "Express-Training TestDaF papierbasiert B2/C1 (mit Tutor)", a tutored express course for the paper-based test, and "Express-Gruppenkurs: Training digitaler TestDaF B2/C1", an express group course for the digital version. One of the reasons the page gives for choosing DUO is "I am preparing for the TestDaF and want to familiarise myself with the test and practice."
Dates, prices and support
The home page lists upcoming start dates for the tutored courses: Basis-Deutsch A1.1, Uni-Deutsch B1.1 and TestDaF-Training B2/C1 were all set to begin on 04.11.2026, that is November 4, 2026. The home and Learning with DUO pages show no course prices; the self-study format is the one the site describes as "especially cost-effective".
For questions, the site has an FAQ on its language courses, a contact page, a "Your contact person" page and a phone line, +49 234 36715 500, shown at the top of every page. The site runs in German and English, and a separate section, DUO for institutions, is aimed at organizations rather than individual learners.
What learners say
The DUO Stories on the English page came out of a campaign marking 25 Years of g.a.s.t., in which learners completed five sentence starters. Four are shown. A learner from Japan on the paper-based TestDaF express course wrote of the tutor: "She corrected the tasks reliably and promptly, and gave encouraging feedback." Shubham Divakar from India, on Basis-Deutsch A1.2 with a tutor and ECTS, said: "Since I started learning with DUO, I have started understanding my everyday surroundings better, like the train announcements, billboards, etc." Iskandar H. from Indonesia called DUO "a high-quality program that supports independent learning while also providing excellent academic and cultural preparation for life in Germany." Nesibe Seher M. from Turkey, on the digital TestDaF group course, singled out "the combination of a structured learning environment and individual support from tutors."
Who it suits
The page's own list of reasons describes the intended learner: someone who wants to learn German to study in Germany, a student already enrolled who wants to improve, a TestDaF candidate, someone who wants to learn on their own or to learn faster alongside a language course, and a learner who wants experienced tutors and enjoys learning on a computer. DUO fits that reader well. The courses run to C1, even the beginner material is drawn from student life, and academic writing and presentations are part of the plan rather than an afterthought. The professional language strand also helps someone heading for an internship or a job in Germany.
It is less of a fit for a learner who wants German for travel or casual conversation, since the content points at university life throughout. The tutored and intensive courses start on fixed dates, so a learner who wants personal feedback from day one may have to wait for the next start; the self-study format begins at any time but corrects automatically. For a future student in Germany who wants a structured route from first lessons to the TestDaF, run by the organization that also offers that test, DUO is a focused choice.
