What Lessonspace is
Lessonspace is a virtual classroom for live tutoring. Its FAQ describes it as "a browser-based virtual classroom built for online teaching and tutoring" that "brings video calls, collaborative whiteboards, documents and teaching tools together in one space." The homepage headline is "The Virtual Classroom Infrastructure for Online Tutoring," and that word, infrastructure, explains who buys it. Individual tutors use it as their teaching room, and tutoring companies and education businesses use it as the classroom layer behind their own service, either through a central admin dashboard or by embedding it in their own product through the API. The company is Lessonspace, Inc.
Each lesson takes place in a Space: a persistent room with video, chat and a whiteboard. The FAQ explains that a Space saves automatically, so whiteboards and materials are still there for the next lesson, and the same Space can be reused for recurring lessons with the same student or group. A tutor teaching a weekly student picks up exactly where the last lesson ended.
The whiteboard and teaching tools
The whiteboard is the center of the product. It is an infinite canvas with pens, highlighters, text boxes, shapes and arrows, whiteboard or blackboard backgrounds with grid or line guides, and unlimited tabs. Teachers can import a PDF (one whiteboard per page), upload Word or PowerPoint files, snap a screenshot of a webcam feed or shared screen straight onto the board, and pull resources from a searchable library inside the Space. Document tabs give a more structured writing area, and Code tabs support pair programming with syntax highlighting. The features page lists a "Visual Equation and Graph Editor with LaTeX Support" for STEM subjects, sticky notes for brainstorming, full support for graphics tablets such as Wacom and stylus input on iPads, and a Cobrowser for working on the same browser tabs together. Spaces can be exported as templates and boards downloaded as images.
Petrus Reis, CEO of First Step English, is quoted on the features page calling it "the Ferrari of online whiteboards."
Teachers also get tools for running the room. A leading mode forces every student to follow the teacher to a tab or video mode, edit locks stop unwanted changes, and the teacher can remotely mute a microphone, hide a video feed, or kick a user, whose IP address is then banned. A built-in timer has countdown, alarm and stopwatch settings, and confetti and fireworks effects reward good work. After a recorded lesson, an AI tool can generate a short lesson summary "capturing the key discussions, problem areas, and learning breakthroughs," with suggested next steps that can be shared with parents and admins.
Video, devices and recording
Up to 10 people can join a Space with video feeds, which suits one-to-one and small-group teaching. Webcam and screen sharing run at the same time, and there are four video layouts: sidebar, grid, floating and present. Audio and video run on WebRTC in the browser with no installs, an ML-powered noise filter cuts background sound, a custom-branded lobby lets users set up devices, and a worldwide server network places each Space on the nearest server. An automated troubleshooting dialog diagnoses faulty webcams, muted microphones, firewalls and ad blockers on the teacher's and students' devices. Chat persists between sessions, supports markdown and emoji reactions, and has an optional profanity filter.
The FAQ says Lessonspace "works on laptops, desktops, tablets and smartphones," with Chrome or Firefox recommended. Students join with one click and need no account.
Organizations can turn on recording and decide who can view recordings; the workspace, the video or both can be recorded, and recordings play back from a central dashboard for review or quality checks. Recordings are stored free for 90 days, with a paid storage add-on for longer.
Administration, integrations and the API
For tutoring businesses, the management dashboard keeps students, teachers and staff in separate groups with role-based permissions, assigns Spaces to teachers, locks Spaces outside a set time window, limits tools by role, and adds custom branding and theming. Lesson analytics cover lesson hours and participants across all Spaces. Teachers and students in an organization do not need their own paid accounts.
The pricing page lists "10+ Integrations," naming Teachworks, Tutorcruncher, TutorBird and Wise. The developer API lets a company create, customize and embed Spaces at scale through an iframe, preload content, and capture session events through webhooks; the API reference documents endpoints for sessions, recordings, transcripts, Spaces and users. The enterprise page adds white-labeling with your own domain, logo and colors, SSO, dedicated account management and onboarding help. On security, the FAQ says Lessonspace "is SOC 2 Type II certified and compliant with GDPR and COPPA," and claims 99.99% uptime.
Plans and pricing
Pricing is a monthly fee that includes a block of lesson hours, with overage at a per-hour rate, billed monthly with "No lock-in or contracts":
- Basic, $9.00 USD a month, for part-time tutors: 10 hours a month included, then 1.95 an hour.
- Starter, $29.00 a month, for full-time tutors or tutor groups: 30 hours included, then $1.80 per hour.
- Pro, $99.00 a month, for small to medium agencies: 100 hours included, then 1.20 an hour.
- Advanced, $199.00 a month, for large agencies: 200 hours included, then 0.95 an hour.
- Enterprise, custom, with per-minute billing, for customers doing 1000+ participant hours a month.
Billable time is counted per second and only while two or more connections are in a Space, so preparing a lesson alone costs nothing. Every plan includes unlimited Spaces and concurrent sessions with up to 4 participants; sessions with more are billed an additional $0.25 per participant hour. Unused hours do not roll over. Add-ons cover recording storage beyond 90 days ($0.20 per GB per month), the Cobrowser after 600 free participant minutes a month ($0.004 per participant minute) and transcriptions ($0.001 per transcribed participant minute). Custom SLAs start at $400 per month including 100,000 participant minutes. A 14-day free trial includes all features with no credit card, and payment is by major credit card through Stripe.
Who Lessonspace suits
Lessonspace fits private tutors who teach visually, especially in math, science, languages and coding, where the equation editor, Code tabs and persistent boards earn their keep. The hour-based plans scale from a part-time tutor on Basic to agencies on Pro and Advanced, and the per-second billing means waiting for a late student is free. Tutoring companies get a branded admin layer and integrations with common tutoring management tools, and edtech companies can embed the classroom in their own product. Tegan Bombard of ClassDojo, quoted on the enterprise page, sums up its pitch: "Built by educators specifically for online learning, Lessonspace brings native tools that foster interactive, hands-on engagement."
It is a live classroom, not a course platform. A creator selling self-paced video courses is shopping for a different kind of product, and groups above 10 video participants are beyond what a Space currently holds, while one-to-one and small-group tutoring is exactly what it is built for.
